Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide skills necessary to the trade of painting following recognized procedures and techniques for such work. Responsible for applying decorative and protective coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to exterior or interior surfaces, special coatings, industrial and epoxy applications.

  • Clean and remove previous coating, wash walls and trim, repair and patch as necessary.
  • May read and interpret blue prints, drawings, and sketches.
  • Provides material lists for painting projects and tasks.
  • Installs, repairs, tapes, and applies coatings to various wall and ceiling surfaces.
  • Selects, mixes, and applies proper coatings on various types of surfaces.
  • Daily creation and completion of work orders and time reports.
  • Responsible for all painting related tasks during in house remodeling projects.
  • Daily coordination of work with end users, subcontractors, and other facilities staff.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area, shop, and tools.
  • Keeps records of materials used and locations worked.
  • Maintains an inventory of paint stock and equipment.
  • Cross-trains coworkers and painting staff on various types of equipment, projects and tasks related to field.
  • Inspects areas of responsibility and observes activities in these areas on a regular basis.
  • Performs work safely in accordance with department safety procedures and the College of DuPage safety program.
  • Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practices to supervisor.
  • Participates in snow removal operations.
  • Required to report to work during emergency conditions and may be assigned to report to college personnel at a different time, location, and to perform different duties as necessary.
  • Occasionally uses carpentry hand tools and carpentry shop machinery.
  • Occasionally moves office and classroom, furniture, fixtures and equipment.
  • Occasionally installs, repairs, and replaces floor systems and ceiling tile.
  • Occasionally assists grounds section staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications:

    • Education
      • High school diploma or equivalent required.
      • Some vocational training as a painter preferred.
    • Experience
      • Two (2) years of experience in facilities maintenance required.
      • Proficiency in spoken and written English required.
      • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in position required.
      • Valid Illinois Driver's License required.
      • Snow removal experience preferred.
      • 5 year's experience in professional painting preferred.
    • COD Training
      • Bloodborne Pathogens
      • Hazardous Communications
      • Forklift /Scissor /Aerial Lift
      • Electrical Safety


    Working Conditions:

  • Knowledge of all tools and equipment used in the trade.
  • Ladders and step stools used daily.
  • Use of personal protective equipment when required.
  • Erect and utilize extension ladder, scaffolding and motorized lifts.
  • Required to be scheduled on call to aid in snow emergencies. Working hours must be flexible.
  • Must be able to work as assigned at different times and/or locations.
  • Must be able to lift 50+ lbs.
  • Work involves frequent reaching, ladder climbing, squatting, kneeling, pushing, pulling and grasping.
  • Uniform appearance must be clean and in good condition.
  • Must wear solid soled shoes.
  • Usually good working conditions, but could be exposed to harsh weather and long hours in emergency situations.
  • Position requires extensive walking and the ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Required uniforms supplied by College of DuPage.
  • Must pass physical exam at College expense.
  • This position requires a background check, physical and drug screen.

    Hiring Range: Starting salary beginning at $22.63/hourly

    Competitive starting pay is dependent on education and experience.
