  • Location: Birmingham, AL
  • Position Type: Engineering - Other Engineering

The School of Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications from highly qualified individuals for multiple full-time, tenure-earning and tenured positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor, based on experience and qualifications. Specific responsibilities include research in neural engineering, teaching, and service. Appointments are available in any department in the School appropriate to the candidate's research and teaching interests, and joint appointments with the School of Medicine will be considered if appropriate. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Engineering or related fields (Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Biology) and have previous research experience in neuroengineering; a proven track record of competitive funding as PI is preferred. To be competitive for a tenured position, candidates must have an outstanding vision for independent research and be nationally recognized for their scholarship and commitment to education.

The School of Engineering

The UAB School of Engineering is dedicated to research excellence and providing the highest quality education to a diverse population of future engineers. It consists of five departments: Biomedical Engineering (joint with the UAB School of Medicine), Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering with approximately 50 faculty members and enrolls about 900 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. The School of Engineering includes six undergraduate majors in five academic departments, as well as more than 15 graduate degree programs. UAB Engineering offers highly adaptable programs that range from traditional M.S./Ph.D. pathways to online master of engineering degree tracks for working professionals. UAB Engineering offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration—not only within engineering but with other academic departments across campus and local industry.

Neuroengineering and Neuroscience at UAB

The Schools of Engineering and Medicine are located on the same physical campus in the heart of Birmingham, just a few minutes' walk apart. Engineering and Medicine recently launched a joint Ph.D. program in Neuroengineering, and engineering undergraduates have the opportunity to pursue a minor in neuroengineering. Research in neuroengineering is supported by collaboration with the Departments of Neurology, Neurobiology, and Neurosurgery in the School of Medicine and with the Comprehensive Neuroscience Center, which has more than 350 members. Neuroscience research at UAB is currently supported by more than $128M in active grants. The centerpiece of the UAB Health System is the 1150-bed University Hospital, among the largest in the United States. The health care facility spans 5 city blocks, occupies 13 major buildings, and covers 2.1 million square feet of space. Clinical neuroscience areas of strength include stroke and vascular disease, movement disorders, memory disorders, epilepsy, neuroimmunology, neuroimaging, neuromuscular disease and neuro-oncology. There are active programs in deep brain stimulation and epilepsy surgery; the functional neurosurgery group performs 250 awake craniotomies per year, providing excellent opportunities for in vivo human recording. There are also active programs in functional and molecular neuroimaging. Key NIH Center and infrastructure awards include a Morris K. Udall Center of Excellence in Parkinson's Research, an NIA funded Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and an NIH Brain Initiative UH3 award. UAB is a site for both NeuroNEXT, the NIH network for phase II trials, and StrokeNet, which supports NIH clinical trials in stroke.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a research university and academic health center that discovers, teaches, and applies knowledge for the intellectual, cultural, social, and economic benefit of Birmingham, the state, and beyond. UAB is internationally renowned for its intensely collaborative culture that has — for more than five decades — produced breakthroughs in education, health care, research, and service. UAB was ranked #1 in the United States for 2018 and 2019 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for Young Universities. In 2021, UAB was named America's number one best large employer by Forbes, topping a list of more than 500 public and private corporations, hospitals, and universities. In addition, Forbes named UAB number four in the nation for diversity among large employers. Spanning more than 100 city blocks, UAB is the state of Alabama's largest single employer with some 25,000 employees and has an annual, state-wide economic impact exceeding $7.15 billion. U.S. News & World Report's 2021 "America's Best Graduate Schools" ranks 17 UAB graduate programs among the nation's top 25 and eight UAB specialties were ranked among the nation's top 50 in the magazine's 2020-2021 Best Hospitals report. UAB research grants and awards are at a record high, exceeding $602 million in FY19, including $358 million in NIH funding. UAB ranks 15th among public universities in federal research funding and eighth among public universities in NIH funding.

Research Areas

Ideal candidates will have a strong record of research and scholarship in neuroengineering. Preference will be given to candidates with active research in one of the following areas:

    1. Neural signal and image analysis that combine discoveries in neural science and data science using machine learning, deep learning and other related approaches.

    1. Theoretical neurophysiology investigations to increase understanding of how electrical signals are transmitted and processed by neurons and glia in healthy brain tissue, in patients with neurological and neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Parkinson's disease, essential tremors, epilepsy).

    1. Connection of devices to the human brain or nervous system including biomedical signal processing, brain-computer interface (BCI), deep brain stimulation, neuromodulation, translating basic research into clinical applications.

Required Application Documents

Application review will begin December 15, 2021 and continue until positions are filled. Applications may be submitted online at https://uab.peopleadmin.com/postings/8244 . Applications should include a cover letter outlining interest and qualifications (including research and teaching), a CV, a diversity statement, and contact information for three professional references. References will not be contacted without permission of applicants, and formal letters of reference will be requested for finalists only. Questions may be directed to Dr. Jeffrey Holmes, Dean of Engineering and Search Committee Chair, at holmesjw@uab.edu .
