Overview:
The Farm Manager serves in a full-time, twelve-month management position (MPP) and reports directly to the Dean of the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (Jordan College). The Farm Manager works with the department chairs, staff, faculty and unit coordinators to manage the daily operations of the University Agricultural Laboratory (UAL) to effectively meet the mission of the UAL: The University Agricultural Laboratory serves as the field-based laboratory for our instruction, research, outreach and community engagement.

The University Agricultural Laboratory (UAL) or the "Farm" operates to provide students with hands-on learning experiences in all aspects of agriculture. The 1,000-acre Farm located on the Fresno State campus, plus 4,500 acres of Sierra foothill rangeland located 20 minutes from campus at the San Joaquin Experimental Range near O'Neals are comprised of functional enterprises that serve as outdoor classrooms and laboratories for faculty and students. (NOTE: The UAL encompasses Agricultural Operations, UAL production units and the San Joaquin Experimental Range (SJER)).

Compensation:
The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position with an attractive benefits package which includes but is not limited to: a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month; 12+ paid holidays; excellent choice of medical, dental and vision insurance, long term disability coverage, life insurance; and retirement benefits.

Position Summary:
Major duties of the job include:

  • Provides leadership for the overall operation of the UAL
  • Coordinates the day-to-day activities for maximizing productivity of the UAL
  • Provides initiative and direction for long-term planning for the UAL
  • Manages the human resources processes and procedures for UAL for both State and Agricultural Foundation employees
  • Manages the financial accounting and reporting processes and procedures for the UAL for both State and Agricultural Foundation accounts
  • Assures all required reports are prepared accurately and submitted according to regulatory agency requirements
  • Implements and maintains compliance with all CSU directives, policies, procedures and related State regulations
  • Facilitates timely and effective communication among diverse stakeholders in the UAL
  • Prepares quarterly and annual reports as required
    Secondary duties of the job include:
  • Serves on the Jordan College Dean's Leadership Team
  • Serves on the Jordan College Administrative Council
  • Serves on the Jordan College UAL Committee
  • Serves on other committees or workgroups as a UAL representative
  • Provides support for FFA Field Days and events utilizing the UAL
  • Develops resource opportunities for internal and external support

    Qualifications:
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles of financial planning and budget processes.
  • General knowledge of current regulations to ensure farm activities comply with government regulations.
  • Knowledge of pests and diseases and an understanding of how they spread and how to treat them
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards applicable to farming.
  • Knowledge of modern farming methods including sustainability efforts and maintaining bio-diversity
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective management and supervision, motivation, performance evaluation, progressive discipline and grievance procedures.
  • Ability to develop and implement short and long-term plans and initiatives to meet established development goals and objectives.
  • Ability to articulate performance expectations to staff, developing objectives and strategies as they relate to established goals.
  • Organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks and projects under competing deadlines and maintain flexibility in response to constantly shifting priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills with ability to engage with different levels and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise sound administrative judgment and initiative in the development of new methods and procedures and in the solution of difficult personnel problems.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and make strategic business decisions.
  • Ability to compile, write, and present reports related to program.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive workplace where diversity and individual differences are valued and leveraged to achieve the vision and mission of the university.

    Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher - may be agriculture related or business administration
  • Education and experience should be sufficient to meet major and secondary job duties such as:Business degree with 5-10 years farm management experience in diversified farming or ranching operation OR Agriculture-related degree with 5-10 years of business/management experience in diversified complex operation
  • Valid California Drivers License; note: will be required to attain and maintain Defensive Driving Certification
  • Experience working with students providing hands-on learning experiences and didactic support as appropriate

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Master's degree (see above)
  • Experience in cost management, employee safety, regulatory compliance and project management
  • Experience working with Collective Bargaining Agreements
  • Experience in systems management
  • Familiar with requirements and implementation of Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
  • Familiar with requirements and implementation of Sustainable Groundwater Management (SGMA)
