The job of Laboratory Technician Class Series (Chemistry) is done for the purpose/s of performing a variety of learning resources activities, technical and clerical work related to the operation of a student chemistry lab.

Essential Functions:
  • Compiles data from a variety of sources for the purpose of complying with financial, legal and/or administrative requirements.
  • Evaluates situations involving other staff, students, the public, etc. for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Maintains documents, files and records for the purpose of providing up-to-date reference and audit trail for compliance.
  • Monitors assigned activities and/or processes for the purpose of coordinating activities and ensuring compliance with established financial, legal and/or administrative requirements.
  • Prepares written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  • Processes documents and materials for the purpose of disseminating information to appropriate parties.
  • Researches a variety of information for the purpose of providing information and/or recommendations for resolution.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of internal and external parties (e.g. faculty, administrators, students, etc.) for the purpose of providing information, facilitating communication among parties and/or providing direction.
  • Sets-up labs for the purpose of supporting assigned instructors.
Other Functions
  • Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.


Requirements & Desirables:
REQUIREMENTS
1. Community College and/or Vocational School Degree with study in job related area; and
2. Job Related Experience within Specialized Field is required; and
3. Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic,cultural and ethnic backgrounds of the community college students and staff.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  1. AA/AS or BS in Chemistry or in a Chemistry-related field: chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or equivalent.
  2. Ability to make and maintain solutions, reagents, set up instructional laboratory for students, and operate/maintain standard chemistry laboratory instruments/equipment (IR, pH meters, AA/AE, spectrophotometers, NMR, etc.)
  3. Experience working in a chemistry instructional laboratory setting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (Desirable Attributes & Skills)

KNOWLEDGE is required to: perform algebra and/or geometry; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats and/or present information before groups; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: use of equipment required in lab; processes required to complete lab projects; safety requirements.

SKILLS are required to: perform multiple technical tasks with an occasional need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating equipment used in lab; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications. Use of new or additional equipment brought about by new technology shall be incorporated consistent with the level of responsibility and complexity of this job.

ABILITY is required to: schedule activities; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and coordinate a significant number of factors in the use of equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others under a variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and use equipment for a variety of purposes under different conditions that requires an understanding of various methods of operation. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of similar types and/or purposes; and utilize a wide variety of job related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action and reach solutions; with data it is limited; and with equipment it is significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with constant interruptions. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:
  1. In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  2. Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
  3. California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  4. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision; leading, guiding and/or coordinating other persons; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; significant reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling. Generally the job requires 55% sitting, 35% walking and 10% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, some hazardous conditions (e.g. mechanical, cuts, burns, infectious disease, high decibel noise, etc.), and in varying atmospheric conditions.

Monday - Wednesday; 10:00am - 8:00pm (half-hour lunch)
Thursday; 10:30am - 8:00pm (half-hour lunch)
37.5 hours per week

NOTE: The College is closed on Fridays during the summer period, when the work schedule may change according to departmental needs.

SALARY INFORMATION
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Salary Range: CSEA 115
Starting Salary Range: $4,489.87 to $4,948.12 per month (Step 1 to 3). Normal entering step is Step 1.

CLASSIFICATION & RETIREMENT PLAN
Employees in classifications represented by the California School Employees' Association (CSEA) Chapter 196 and are required to comply fully with the CSEA/Marin Community College District (MCCD) Collective Bargaining Agreement, including payment of union dues or charitable contributions. General information regarding rights and responsibilities under the Agreement can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreements section of our Human Resources site. CSEA employees are also members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), to which the member contributes up to 7% of his/her reportable compensation on a monthly basis.
