PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSE PRACTITIONER OR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant)

Primary Duties:
Student Health Services (SHS) is an outpatient primary care clinic, staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who provide medical care to students enrolled in the University in accordance with policies set by the Board of Trustees of California State University. An in-house licensed pharmacy, federally certified laboratory, and x-ray department complement the services available. The basic clinic schedule is 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with no evening or weekend duty and the summer work week is 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday, with no evening or weekend duty.

The Physician Assistant works under general administrative direction of the Director of the Student Health Center and Medical Chief of Staff, using established standardized procedures and processes, the primary focus of this position is to provide medical care for common and uncommon psychiatric illness and medical illness with a psychiatric component. This care can include physical examinations, assessment, diagnostic, treatment and management of psychiatric illness, order tests and interpret the results, counsel patients on preventive care, and preventive and health maintenance services; and assist, and cooperate with, both on campus qualified personnel and outside Medical Providers to provide quality health care services to eligible students. Incumbent will also participate in providing health education and health promotion activities.

Required Education:

EDUCATION:

  • Nurse Practitioners must possess an academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).
  • Physician Assistants must possess an academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Physician Assistant medical training program or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Incumbents must be clinically competent in the medical specialty of psychiatry and must possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant within that specialty.
    AND
    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS FOR BOTH:
  • Possess (or ability to obtain by date of hire) and maintain the following:
    • A valid and current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) number and certificate.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS NURSE PRACTITIONER ONLY:

  • A valid and current California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • A valid and current BRN Furnishing certificate.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT ONLY:

  • A valid and current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of California. Licensing by the Medical Board of California requires passing the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE).
Special Requirements:
  • The person holding this position is considered a General Mandated Reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 (revised July 21, 2017) as a condition of employment.
  • Adhere and comply to Family Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines and regulations.
  • A valid and current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position. This is considered a sensitive position. NURSE PRACTITIONER:

  • A valid and current California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • A valid and current BRN Furnishing certificate.

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT:

  • A valid and current license to practice as a Physician Assistant Certified in Psychiatry in the State of California. Licensing by the Medical Board of California requires passing the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE).
  • A valid and current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) number and certificate.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent/applicant will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This position is required to stand or walk for approximately six hours per shift. Keyboarding and mousing is required to operate computers. Light lifting is required to transport or use medical records, instruments and supplies. May be required to push or pull patients in wheelchairs. Must be able to travel across campus to other offices and buildings for meetings and events.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position will work in the Student Health Services in offices and treatment rooms that are kept clean. The duties of this position involve direct, personal contact with patients. There may be exposure to infection, communicable diseases and contaminated material. Infectious material hazards involve regular exposure to disease-bearing specimens, body fluids, wastes and blood-borne pathogens. May require occasional additional work hours. May be called back for disaster response or emergencies.
