Under the general supervision of an Assistant Director of Residential Life, the Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) is responsible for creating and fostering an environment that inspires success for all students through transformative experiences. The RLC will also serve as an educational community standards officer for their residential community and as a resource to the general campus community for issues of student and campus resident life. California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is a residential campus therefore developing relationships and community as well as a sense of belonging and socially just inclusion to enhance student learning is central to the work of this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Leadership Development and Supervision: Directly supervise and evaluate 10-20 Resident Advisors (RA) and other paraprofessional staff as appropriate. Facilitate an environment of personal growth, leadership development and academic success through formal training sessions, one-on-one meetings, scheduled staff meetings and staff development opportunities. Communicate and clarify departmental, division and university goals and expectations in reference to the RA role. Support RAs individually and as a collective team to develop skills in relationship and community building, leadership, administration and achieving personal balance. Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of Fall, Winter, and Spring training for RAs. Plan and facilitate various staff training workshops for both professional and paraprofessional staff.

Individual and Community Development: Establish a positive atmosphere in the residential community that is conducive to student academic and developmental success. Promote the development of inclusive individuals and communities that are socially just and supportive of all aspects of identity. Provide support in the resolution of conflicts and encourage communication among staff and residents. Develop strategies in line with the SHRL and Student Life vision, mission and values to enhance residents' experiences while they live in the CSUMB residential community. Create an environment through staff and interactions that strives to support the Otter Promise by providing introductory and continual support and connection. Encourage students to grow toward personal autonomy and interdependence.

Counseling and Advising: Establish meaningful relationships with residents in the community and provide counseling when residents experience academic, personal, developmental and/or community difficulties. Refer students to appropriate university and/or community resources. Intervene and assist in the resolution of interpersonal and inter-group conflicts which may disrupt the normal routine of a residential community and student learning. Provide informal individual and group counseling to resolve roommate or community conflicts. Assist in establishing appropriate agreements/compromises to address student concerns. Keep supervisor informed of all noteworthy incidents occurring in the residential community, providing additional follow-up with students as necessary. Address behavioral concerns and emergencies appropriately.

Residential Learning and Development: In conjunction with SHRL Academic Initiatives staff, advise RAs on the development and implementation of learning strategies centered in the Residential Learning Outcomes (RLO) of communication, diversity and cultural competency, navigating systems, sustainability and wellbeing. Additionally, RLCs may be tasked with facilitation of Living Learning Programs (LLP) within their residential community. Academic focuses, specific identities, and personal interests are all showcased within CSUMB's LLP communities. Incorporation of faculty presence and campus/community partners should be integrated throughout efforts.

Administration: Perform a variety of administrative duties, including but not limited to, managing communications, budgeting, providing reports, check-in/out procedures, room transfers, assessing damage charges and sharing information with supervisors and colleagues. Scheduling, attending and facilitating meetings as well as time management of tasks is vital to this role. Collecting student data via anecdotal evidence and/or survey may also be required in order to make sound, data-driven decisions. Respond to daily requests for information and assistance from SHRL staff, residents, residents' supporters and campus/community partners. Recommend and initiate solutions to problems or issues in systems' procedures, ensuring residents' needs are continually met in a supportive, caring manner. Prior to each summer term, all RLCs, Assistant Directors and the Associate Director will assess student and departmental needs in order to determine appropriate summer responsibilities.

Student Conduct: Serve as a primary community standards officer for low level cases (level 1) across SHRL. The RLC will consult and partner with the department's Conduct Coordinator and Student Conduct Administrator to develop sanctions balanced between educational and restorative actions. Follow-up with residents regarding incidents and completion of sanctions will be often. Follow-up may consist of measures to maximize student learning and development, ensure community safety and/or ensure the wellbeing of those involved.

Crisis and Emergency Response: Serves on a campus-wide evening, weekend, and campus closure on-call crisis response duty rotation alongside fellow live-in professional staff members. Respond to a variety of needs such as crisis and emergency intervention, facility maintenance, health and safety concerns, support for the department's student staff members, as well as conflict resolution for on-campus residents. RLCs will confront University and SHRL policy and community standard violations when observed. This position will often complete Incident Reports (IR) and Campus Security Authority (CSA) reports to support the University's reporting and compliance efforts. Additionally, RLCs serve as Building Emergency Managers for the areas in which they are assigned.

Successful candidates will possess: a working knowledge of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education; an understanding of student development, staff development, leadership development, and multicultural issues; working knowledge of management techniques and personnel practices; ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to departmental and university-wide goals; solid administrative and organizational skills (including the ability to effectively utilize computer hardware and software tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Gmail, Google Drive); effective interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others; the ability to make reasoned and balanced decisions in moderately complex situations; the ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation and functions of Student Housing & Residential Life, as well as the greater University Corporation, and CSUMB organizations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university in a job-related field AND two years of experience in planning, coordinating or directing college-level activities for student services program or in a related field (live-in staff experience preferred such as a Graduate Resident Director or full-time Resident Director). Masters degree preferred.

Specialized Skills:
Must be available to work evening and weekends when necessary. Demonstrated technical literacy with electronic mail, mail merges, data entry, electronic scheduling, and internet communication software. Ability to work in an occasional high-pressured environment. Ability to operate a wide variety of office equipment and independently troubleshoot problems. Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above. Ability to complete and pass training in Defensive Driving. Must continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Additional experience as live-in staff and Masters Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Sociology, or a related field highly desirable; demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience; experience advising student groups; demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence; experience working with a multicultural population; familiarity performing community service learning; and demonstrated technical literacy.

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $20-$22, dependent upon experience and qualifications. Apartment and a meal plan included as additional compensation for night and weekend responsibilities. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. This is a 12-month, full-time, non-exempt position.

Corporation positions are at-will employment. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
