Basic Function:
The Mechanical Engineering Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) invites applications for a faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. Required qualifications for the position include: an earned doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field, a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, a demonstrated record of, or potential for scholarly research, and excellent communication skills. Candidates will be considered from the general areas of turbomachinery, aircraft propulsion, combustion, aeroacoustics, multiphase flows, or other closely related areas.

Successful candidates will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses as well as advising undergraduate projects in the Mechanical Engineering Program and Aerospace Engineering Program of the Mechanical Engineering Department. The candidates will be expected to develop and sustain an externally funded research program accompanied by strong scholarship.

The Mechanical Engineering Department at WPI (http://www.wpi.edu/academics/me/) has 35 full-time faculty members and offers undergraduate degrees in mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering to about 1,000 students. The department offers graduate degrees in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials science and engineering, and manufacturing engineering to about 300 graduate students. The department's externally sponsored research expenditures averaged over past five years has exceeded $10M a year.
