The School of Nursing and Health Studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City seeks applications for a 12-month tenured or tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor to conduct research, to teach in the PhD and other programs, and to mentor PhD students.



UMKC commands a leadership role in the life and health sciences in Kansas City.The University of Missouri-Kansas City is a comprehensive urban university with nationally recognized programs in the health sciences, arts, and business/urban affairs. The UMKC School of Nursing and Health Studies is nationally ranked byU.S. News & World Reportfor its graduate programs. The School recently completed a federally funded project to recruit and retain male and racially underrepresented students in nursing, and these efforts have bolstered enrollment. We are particularly interested in candidates who are from or can help mentor students from underrepresented or underserved groups. Situated in the state-of-the-art Health Sciences Building on the Health Sciences District campus, the School of Nursing and Health Studies is located at the center of life and health sciences education and research, alongside schools of pharmacy, dentistry, and medicine. Three teaching hospitals, the Kansas City Health Department, and several specialty and low-income clinics sit adjacent to campus. We are also linked with life and health sciences research on the UMKC Volker Campus through the College of Arts and Sciences, including biological sciences, computing, and engineering. Expertise at the School of Nursing and Health Studies spans the translational continuum with faculty conducting basic science, clinical, community-based, urban health, health behavior change, and nursing education research.UMKC participates in Frontiers, the Regional CTSI funded by the National Institutes of Health at the nearby University of Kansas Medical Center.



The selected candidate will be appointed to a full-time, 12-month tenure/tenure-track faculty role and will have an integral part in fostering innovative research by mentoring PhD student researchers affiliated with the School of Nursing and Health Studies. The individual will promote excellence by guiding students in developing expertise in their research focus and by providing guidance on study design and the ethical conduct of original research. They will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers of varying levels of experience and expertise: from novice students, other faculty, and clinicians to experienced and extramurally funded researchers. Opportunities exist for research with interprofessional and multi-disciplinary teams. It is expected that faculty collaborations and other research will result in scholarly publications, grant applications, and extramural funding. The successful applicant will demonstrate an ability to teach graduate-and doctoral-level courses and, as needed, in undergraduate courses.



The faculty selected for this position will be expected to: a) maintain a sustained program of research and scholarship and externally funded research; b) provide mentorship for PhD students; c) teach courses in the programs in Nursing and Health Studies; d) provide service appropriate to the position; and e) advance the goals of the School of Nursing and Health Studies and the University of Missouri-Kansas City's Strategic Plan, including our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The school seeks faculty of regional or national prominence to teach in our innovative programs. Accredited by the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education, the Commission of Accreditation and approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing, the School values excellence in teaching, scholarship, clinical practice, and service.



Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Earned PhD in nursing or related field

  2. If a RN, hold an unencumbered license to practice nursing in Missouri

  3. Demonstrated evidence of sustained scholarship and current extramural funding

  4. Record of high-quality teaching

  5. Service appropriate to the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor

  6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  7. Online teaching experience


Preferred Qualifications:

  1. RN or experience working with nursing practice, education, and/or research

  2. A national and international reputation in a focused area of research

  3. Experience in interprofessionalteaching and research

  4. Ability to mentor faculty and doctoral students
