The Department of Theatre Arts and Dance in the College of Liberal Arts is looking to fill an Assistant/Associate faculty position beginning September 1, 2022. This is a tenure/tenure-track position. Applicants should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: Scenic Design, Lighting Design, Projection Design,and Scenography,or any combination within the Design and Technologyarea.



Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to diversity and equity in education through their scholarship, teaching, and/or service as well as a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.



The responsibilities of the faculty member in this nine-month position include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching courses in the Design and Technology concentration. Assignments may include: 1) teaching in areas of expertise, 2) Mentoring student designers and technicians.

  • Designing for the production season.

  • Research and/or creative activity in the faculty member's area of expertise.

  • Provide leadership to full and part-time faculty and students within the Design/Tech area, including, but not limited to, short-term and long-term planning, organization, production processes, curriculum review and development.

  • Engage in service on Departmental, College, and University levels. This includes serving on committees and participating in recruitment.

  • Other duties as assigned.




Required qualifications

  • A terminal degree (MFA, PhD, or equivalent) in one (or more) of the following, or a closely related area: Scenic Design, Lighting Design, Projection Design, and Scenography, or any combination within the Design/Tech area.

  • Evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, international and/or national research and/or creative activity in the candidate's field.

  • Strong leadership, management, artistic, communication, and collaborative skills.

  • Two or more years teaching experience at the university level or equivalent excellence in teaching related experiences.

  • Advanced ability to use and teach current techniques and technology in the area of design.

  • Demonstrated ability to empower, advocate for, and value a broad range of students of diverse identities and experiences, as shown through pedagogy, mentoring, and related activities.




Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in multiple design/tech areas.

  • Active membership in USA829

  • Ability to teach digital media, projection design, and emerging visualization technologies.
