Job Summary
As a comprehensive performing arts school set in one of the world's finest public institutions of higher education, the School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) is deeply engaged in the creation, practice, scholarship, and pedagogy of music, theatre, and dance. We aim to provide leadership, nationally and internationally, in all three fields. We assert and celebrate the value of the arts to the mission of the University of Michigan. Further, SMTD is strongly committed to diversity and inclusion as a means of achieving and sustaining excellence.

The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs & Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) will provide executive level leadership in the areas of Student Affairs and DEI, with broad areas of emphasis, including but not limited to responsibility for student services focusing on the academic, emotional, financial, and physical well-being of our students, as well as leading an interconnected approach to DEI as a school-wide ethos with direct impact on and integration of DEI-centered objectives for the various constituents of our community, including faculty, staff, and students.

Reporting directly to the Dean, the Assistant Dean will serve as a member of the School's senior leadership team, and will collaborate closely with other members of the leadership team to continuously develop and implement strategies that will emphasize a successful student experience, as well as a continued deepening and permeation of DEI-centered initiatives, policies, and procedures for all areas of the School. The cross-functional office of the Assistant Dean will serve in an integral role for all students, faculty, and staff, as well as working closely with other University units, to represent the outward face of DEI for the SMTD. Critical to success in this role will be the ability to transition seamlessly between the highly confidential nature of student services to the expressively outward focus of DEI, all while balancing individual student, faculty, and staff needs and simultaneously upholding the policies and procedures of the University.

Responsibilities*
  • Serve as a member of the School's executive team (SAM), and provide leadership in promoting and fostering an integral approach to matters of DEI as they relate to faculty and staff recruitment, student recruitment and services, student affairs, and the SMTD's overall climate and culture.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Equity, Office of General Counsel, and other relevant SMTD and University entities in responding to and educating the community about bias, discrimination, and harassment, and supporting SMTD's compliance with relevant state and federal laws, and University policies (e.g., Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, etc.).
  • Develop, implement, and monitor programs promoting and ensuring DEI goals and objectives for the SMTD community are implemented and achieved; produce and track useful data for measuring success and areas where improvements are needed with regard to the diversity of students, faculty and staff.
  • Provide programs designed to increase education and awareness related to issues of DEI; review and evaluate results of programmatic activities with a particular focus on DEI.
  • Work with SMTD's faculty on curriculum/programming to integrate matters of DEI into the fabric of the SMTD's academic mission.
  • Work with the DEI U-M community leads to establish programmatic objectives and goals; monitor and update SMTD's DEI strategic plan.
  • Mentor community college transfers and college transfers; enhance student academic success and student leadership development.
  • Help identify and recruit underrepresented job candidates and prospective students, with an emphasis on measurably improving the SMTD's reach into and attainment of diverse faculty, staff, and student candidates.
  • Participate in, or help establish best practices surrounding, conflict resolution matters for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Research, design, and implement solutions around the creation of a work culture that recognizes and respects the similarities and differences of faculty and staff at all levels.
  • Develop the support, information, and guidance programs to meet the specific needs of students in both academic and non-academic areas.
  • Collaborate with Associate Deans and campus-wide offices to identify best practices to develop and implement strategic goals and programs to support academic advising, curriculum assistance, student professional development, and wellness; includes working with the SMTD Wellness Initiative Program Manager and the embedded CAPS counselor.
  • Promote student development through individual advising, outreach, resources, and information sessions on assigned programs.
  • Serve as the disability coordinator for SMTD. Manage accommodations for students with disabilities, including scheduling accommodated exams, note-taking services and other services as appropriate.
  • Lead and promote SMTD events that promote DEI initiatives and student-focused programming.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Student Affairs who will serve as an advisor in practices and policies related to student services
  • Work with the Director of Student Affairs to develop resolutions for issues relating to critical incidents, student academic success, and integration of DEI principles into student affairs.
  • Manage a diverse population of staff representing areas in Student Affairs, Advising, DEI, and Wellness.

Required Qualifications*
  • 7 or more years of leadership experience contributing to the success of students as well as DEI initiatives and programs within a higher education setting.
  • Master's degree required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including experience in developing and delivering presentations to senior leadership.

  • Ability to support SMTD's broad range of activities, which includes attending after hours and/or weekend events as needed.
  • Working knowledge of higher education law and policies, particularly related to Title IX and FERPA.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in developing collaborative partnerships with academic and student affairs units across campus.
