Position Summary

This position, in collaboration with, and under the direction of, the Director of the Pride Center, provides support to the Pride Center. The Assistant Director of The Pride Center supports programs and practices directed toward improving 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and Fluid) student outreach, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion and retention, and enrichment of the overall 2SLGBTQIA+ student experience. The Assistant Director provides direction to students, coordinates events and training, and supports advocacy efforts related to the academic and public service mission of San Diego State University. The Assistant Director of The Pride Center collaborates with partners within the Division of Student Affairs, Division of Academic Affairs, students, staff, and campus/community partners to implement training, programs, and services of the Center.

This position will/may be called upon as a resource in responding to sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues as they relate to 2SLGBTQIA+ students. This position will serve as a mentor and advisor to students, and a resource to other faculty/staff positions on campus. This position will work with interns and student assistants to design and deliver programs for graduate and/or undergraduate students to address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class, and ability. This position will promote The Pride Center and raise awareness of 2SLGBTQIA+ excellence and student concerns through supporting events/programs, written materials, and through representation on campus-wide committees.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2024, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity is responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU's staff and faculty at San Diego State University. Departments include, but not limited to, Assistant Deans for Student Affairs; Career Services; Communications Services; Counseling & Psychological Services; Cultural and Identity Centers; Center for Educational Opportunity Programs, Outreach and Success; Financial Aid and Scholarships; Military Veterans Program; New Student and Parent Programs; Office of the Student Ombudsman; Residential Education; Resource Management; Student Ability Success Center; Student Health Services; Student Life and Leadership; Student Rights and Responsibilities; Testing Services Office; Well-being & Health Promotion; and programming related to Inclusive Excellence.

Education and Experience

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Key Qualifications
  • Considerable knowledge of student and leadership development theory, identity development models, group and individual behavior principles, and implications for practice.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training and education workshops.
  • Documented experience developing and coordinating programs and events.
  • Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross- cultural needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ students.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, and administrators regarding issues that impact 2SLGBTQIA+ students.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to conversional, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations.
  • Ability to assess, design, implement and evaluate effective programming and policies as related to this position.
  • Ability to work well independently and follow through on projects with minimal direction.
  • Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing activities.
  • Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and collaborate with diverse constituencies.
  • Ability to recruit, train, and support students for work in the Center and for advocacy work on campus.
  • A Master's degree in LGBT Studies, Women's Studies, Ethnic Students or Cultural Studies, Higher Education Administration or a related field is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create safe working environments for minoritized students, faculty, and staff.
  • Experience participating in and leading movement(s) to create meaningful systemic change.
  • Track record operating with an anti-oppression framework and an anti-deficit lens.
  • Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture.
  • Knowledge and experience working with varied and diverse populations of students.
  • Competency in cross-cultural communication.
  • Experience in student advising is also preferred.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.
  • Possesses leadership qualities such as: proactiveness, vision, being a self-starter, positivity, and creativity.
  • Ability to facilitate difficult dialogues, effectively listen to all points of view and build consensus.
  • Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,025 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,025 - $7,159 per month.
