Position Description
To serve the information needs of library clientele in assigned subject area(s) to include liaison, collection development, user instruction and reference activities; must also cooperate and function as part of a team to provide services to all library users. This is an entry-level rank assigned to those beginning their professional careers or those, who upon their appointment, do not meet the criteria of Associate Librarian. Work is performed under general supervision with latitude for individual initiative and judgment. Evaluation of employee performance is based upon accomplishment of defined objectives.

Major/Essential Functions
The Open Educational Resources Librarian is a member of the TTU Libraries User Services unit and is responsible for providing Open Educational and Scholarly communication resources to support the students, faculty, and staff of Texas Tech University, on campus, at a distance, and with national/international libraries/institutions. Open Educational Resources and other open access models are a current focus of improving the User Services within the Library and are part of Texas Tech Universitys efforts to provide a high quality and affordable education to its students.

The responsibilities of the Open Educational Resources Librarian include:
  • Advocate for and promote OER adoption to all stakeholders (faculty, students, administrators) with sensitivity to diverse perspectives; advocate for open (Creative Commons) licensing of locally created works.
  • Develop, implement, and assess OER-related instructional resources and services in collaboration with relevant campus partners
  • Participate in planning and implementation related to open and affordable course content to ensure open communication and collaboration with relevant university units.
  • Pursue professional development on trends and developments in open and affordable education options and their relationship to scholarly publishing and pedagogy.
  • Leads the library's efforts in developing programs, processes, and services that facilitate the discovery, adoption, creation, and adaptation of OERs.
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments, trends, and best practices related to OERs.
  • Becomes familiar with the growing number of OER repositories.
  • Empower faculty in finding OER resources to help themselves.
  • Serves as consultant to individual faculty who have committed to developing courses.
  • Utilize a variety of outreach and communication methods to engage TTU faculty in the adoption/adaptation of OER.
  • Through collaboration with TTU Librarians facilitate the use of digital tools in research and teaching.
  • Participate in the evaluation and assessment of programs and services, including compiling and analyzing statistical data.
  • Develop and maintain current knowledge of advances in OER, research services, instruction, and other areas related to this position.
  • Serves the TTU community on all matters pertaining to scholarly communication.
  • Through education, promotion and outreach increase the knowledge of the TTU community regarding scholarly communication topics such as digital publishing, open access, open educational resources, copyright, intellectual property rights, scholarly identity and research impact in collaboration with the appropriate library committee.
  • Represent TTU Libraries on committees, task forces, etc for the Texas Digital Library.
  • Actively participate in professional networks and associations for open educational resources. Represent Texas Tech Libraries at professional conferences and regional committees to stay informed about changes and trends in the field.
The Libraries are a member of GWLA, TDL and SPARC of which the Open Educational Resources Librarian is a Libraries representative.

The Open Educational Resources Librarian is a member of the Texas Tech Libraries faculty whose responsibilities include actively pursuing scholarly publishing, professional development, instruction, and service to the Library, University, and community.

Required Qualifications
Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong public service orientation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member and leader.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse population of faculty, staff, student and community members.
  • Demonstrated potential to meet criteria for promotion and tenure.
  • Experience working in Open Educational resources.
  • Knowledge of current trends in Open Education.
  • Knowledge of Scholarly communication.
  • Proficiency in database and online catalog searching.
  • Knowledge of scholarly publication trends, copyright compliance, and licensing implications.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable. Texas Tech University recently surpassed the Hispanic student population threshold necessary for designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).
