COORDINATOR OF ORIENTATION AND NEW STUDENT PROGRAMS (Student Services Professional III or IV)

Primary Duties:
Working under general direction (SSP III) or working independently (SSP IV), incumbent oversees the design, planning, coordination and implementation of Orientation and New Student Programs. Responsibilities include: coordinating the delivery of comprehensive academic advising and transition programs for new students and their families including staffing, policy, fiscal and programmatic functions. Incumbent manages a fee-based budget of $450,000-$600,000, oversees a web-based orientation reservation and reporting system; coordinates policy enforcement (SSP IV only); coordinates faculty advisors; and manages program evaluation and assessment. The incumbent serves as the Instructor of Record for UNIV 389, the training course for student orientation peer advisors, and leads a team of key student staff. This position requires extensive knowledge of university programs, processes, policies and services and the ability to initiate and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, students, campus programs, as well as the general public. Student Life & Leadership is a fast-paced, deadline driven office with a high level of student and public contact. This position has significant impact on the recruitment and retention of students and on creating a welcoming introduction to the university.

Required Education:

EDUCATION:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field.
AND
EXPERIENCE:
Three years (SSP III) or four years (SSP IV) of full-time professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.

  • A Masters degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Additional specialized experience which demonstrates the applicant has successfully applied the knowledge and abilities of a Student Services professional may also be substituted for required education on a year-for year basis.
Special Requirements:

SSP III and IV:

  • The person holding this position is considered a General Mandated Reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act and is required to comply with the requirements of this designation.
  • California State University, Chico, in accordance with CSU policy, requires that the successful candidate complete a background check (including a criminal records check/and or fingerprinting) prior to assuming this position. Failure to satisfactorily complete or pass the background check may impact the job offer or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for posted positions identified as sensitive. This position is considered a sensitive position based on CSU guidelines. Incumbent is responsible for the safety and security of Level 1 data, sometimes also referred to as Level 1 protected data.   • The duties of this position will include participation in a decision that may have a material/financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, this is a designated position under the California State Universitys Conflict of Interest Code and the incumbent will be required to file a Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest and is subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission. (Group/Category: Procurement Card Holder, 2) Note this designation is applicable only if Procurement Card is issued.
  • Throughout employment in this position incumbent must maintain a valid California Drivers License as well as continued completion and compliance of the CSU Defensive Drivers Training course.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent primarily performs professional office work using standard office equipment including computers and is frequently required to sit, move, stand or work in a stationary position for extended periods. This position alternates between remaining in a stationary position and moving about inside the office. Some duties will require walk/travel to other locations, on and off campus. Occasional weekend and evening hours are required to complete work or attend meetings/events.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in a typical office environment using standard office equipment. This position requires frequent interaction with administration, faculty, students, parents, colleagues and community members to perform essential job functions. Must be comfortable relating to students and the general public in both formal and informal settings while maintaining high level of professionalism. Service delivery can vary from individual sessions and group settings to large scale public presentations. Occasional overnight travel required for meetings/events.
