Employment Opportunity

Starting Salary Range: $27,407 to $49,467 per year for this full-time categorically-funded assignment, depending on education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the Children's Center teacher salary schedule is step 9.

Days Per Year: The current advertised assignment will be a 180-day work schedule.

Beginning Date: This categorically-funded, year-to-year, full-time assignment is scheduled for August 17th, 2017 through May 29, 2018, pending categorical funding and Governing Board ratification. Assignment may include days, evenings, and/or weekends.

About the Department: The Cabrillo College Children's Center functions as the demonstration lab program for the Early Childhood Education (ECE) department. Serving families of children ages five months through five years, the center provides a community of mutual respect and growth for children, ECE students and staff. Children's Center staff members are part of a collaborative teaching team with the Early Childhood Education faculty, families, and students. The philosophy of the Center includes a developmentally-based curriculum with a commitment to anti-bias principles. It supports and nurtures the well-being of all families living in a diverse society. Staffing reflects the belief that an optimal learning and care giving environment for children includes a team of people who are diverse in many ways, including ethnicity, languages spoken, family life and community.

Examples of Duties

This full-time categorically-funded assignment, pursuant to Ed Code 87470, requires a commitment to campus, departmental, and community involvement duties including, but not limited to, program planning, assessment of Student Learning Outcomes, professional development and scholarly activity, and service to community and industry.

Under the supervision of the Children's Center Director, program responsibilities will include classroom assignments for creating learning environments for infants, toddlers, or preschoolers. Children's Center Teacher classroom responsibilities, depending on classroom placement, may include:

  • Developing an environment and curriculum which supports the developmental stage of the child, partners with the family, celebrates ethnic and family diversity, and reflects the evolving practice of an anti-bias curriculum classroom.
  • Developing and maintaining children's classroom environments, and implementing appropriate curriculum in areas such as self-concept, sensory awareness, social development, problem-solving, concept formation, physical/motor development, early literacy and early math skills, and that:
    • Are inclusive of children with special needs.
    • Support children whose first and/or home language is other than English.
    • Enhance children's sense of competence, self-esteem and community interdependence through daily routines such as hand washing, diapering, meal/snack times, toileting, rest time, tooth-brushing and cleanup.
  • Assisting ECE faculty in the supervision and mentoring of student teachers and interns in teaching young children, facilitating student discussion groups.
  • Initiating and leading activities that support the family, including: meetings, conferences, home visits and general support of family partnerships.
  • Performing general cleanup and organization of classrooms and office, and shopping for supplies, which may require driving.
  • Meeting with ECE faculty to discuss children, curriculum, and ECE students.
  • Participation in the NAEYC accreditation process and preparation for reviews by Social Service Licensing, Food and Nutrition, and the State Department of Education.
  • Assessing children's development and keeping progress records on children including the use of current Desired Results Development Profile (DRDP)
  • May provide bilingual services to monolingual and limited English-speaking program participants.
  • Related professional assignments may include participation in college shared governance and community activities which may include attendance at faculty meetings and campus-wide committee participation.
  • Performing related duties as required or assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Required Discipline Specific Requirements/Licensure:

  • A minimum of 60 units of college coursework.
  • Possession of or eligibility for a California Child Development Permit at the teacher level.
  • Minimum of two (2) school years of teaching experience, working with a single and consistent group of infants, toddlers, or preschoolers each year.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with families.
  • Ability to safely lift 40 pounds repeatedly each day.
  • Ability to effectively teach and supervise infant, toddlers and/or preschool children.
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct indoor and outdoor curriculum activities.
  • Ability to assist in the instruction of students and family members.
  • Ability to serve as a model teacher to students, families, and community observers.
Required Professional Expertise:
  • Knowledge of and commitment to teaching strategies and methods which enhance student success at community colleges.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach the courses or perform the duties effectively as described above. (A teaching demonstration may be part of the interview.)
  • Ability to communicate well with students of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, including students with disabilities.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.

Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:

  • Possession of or eligibility for a California Child Development Permit at the Master Teacher level.
  • Special training and/or teaching experience in infant/toddler programs.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish/English).
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with state-funded programs and children with special needs.
  • Ability to participate in curriculum development.
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California driver's license and a safe driving record during the course of employment.
