Position Description
The technician will help to design and construct models used in the clinical and professional skills curriculum of the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine (TTU SVM). They will engage faculty in model building iteration to create new instructional items. In addition, the technician will monitor the condition of the commercially purchased and purpose-built teaching models and intervene when necessary to replace parts or do routine maintenance. They will be responsible for ordering model-related supplies and will assist in the set up and break down of clinical and professional skills laboratories, working to assist veterinary technicians as needed. The Clinical Skills Model Technician will work with veterinary faculty, staff, and students to encourage education and advance simulation-based study.
Successful candidates will be expected to foster a values-based environment within the School and to develop collegial relationships with faculty, staff, and students at TTU and the TTUHSC and other institutions as appropriate. Major/Essential Functions
  • Assist veterinary faculty and staff in developing and constructing clinical and professional skills teaching models
  • Monitor the condition of existing models and provide routine maintenance and repair when needed
  • Maintain model laboratory equipment and maintain laboratory in a clean and organized manner
  • Assist with simulation-based educational research
  • Identify and utilize methods of sharing model designs with other veterinary programs
  • Order supplies and manage inventory for model construction and maintenance
  • Optimize efficiency in ordering, creating, using, and repairing models
  • Maintain records of the model construction process
  • Innovatively solve model-based challenges including those related to durability, tactile properties, and function
  • Assist in clinical and professional skills laboratories, including set-up and tear-down
  • Routinely lift 50 pounds or less independently
  • Supervise others in a workshop, such as student workers or other staff regarding use of equipment and safety procedures
  • Support veterinary technicians as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Communicate and work well with faculty, staff, and students
  • Be self-motivated and able to maintain efficiency while working independently
  • Ability to problem solve independently
  • Ability to use imagination and creativity to take an idea and create a product
  • Proficiency in carpentry and basic construction
  • Proficiency with mold-making and casting
  • Ability to work in a group to produce a single product
  • Knowledge of basic veterinary technical skills
  • Assist with clinical and professional skills laboratories


Required Qualifications
Required: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required. Promote and foster the Core Values of the School of Veterinary Medicine. Willingness to learn techniques and material handling for model development. Experience working with power equipment. Examples include, but are not limited to: table saw, band saw, drill press, sanding equipment, etc.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with material handling and construction. Examples include, but are not limited to: carpentry, metal fabrication, adhesives, silicone or other polymers, 3D printing, sewing, etc.
  • Ability to use basic and some advanced computer software and imaging equipment
  • Experience in veterinary and/or human medical fields
  • Experience and/or certification with safety procedures, personal protective equipment, and inspection protocols
