Description
This position will be on-call for media inquiries and will be required to work nights/weekends on occasion, based on the needs of the department.

Candidate must submit at least 2 writing samples of previous work in order to be considered for this position. A writing test may also be required as part of the interview process.


Under the leadership of the Coordinator, Public Relations, the storyteller and copywriter creates fresh written content for advertising, marketing and descriptive texts, and uncovers and utilizes multiple platforms to produce strong, inspiring stories that highlight MATC students and alumni successfully achieving educational goals. Work responsibilities include telling stories that touch the heart and soul of our students and other key audiences.

Upholds the highest editorial standards, communicates well with others, flexible with new technologies and ideas. Writes marketing content that speaks to and engages key audiences. Responsible for creating content that reflects quickly changing positive student life experiences using online, social media and mobile device access. Works closely with creative team members to promote positive student experiences and drive student recruitment and retention while leveraging MATC brand personality and promoting positive student outcomes across social media platforms. Communication is continuous between the division, industry partners, specialized agencies, and governmental regulatory bodies.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops compelling and engaging copy that promotes positive student life experiences utilizing multiple platforms (email, web, digital and social media) to promote and support student recruitment and retention that is consistent with division, department and college-wide goals.
  • Ensures proper revie wof language by internal stakeholders.
  • Identifies positive experiences of current students and alumni that capture student voices and views while developing specific topics of coverage, series and signature segments. Maintains database of future stories.
  • Pitches story ideas, interviews potential students, and researches relevant topics.
  • Demonstrates sound news judgment, the highest editorial ethics and an understanding of the interests and role of news media.
  • Responds to external media inquiries to the college as a backup to the Coordinator, Public Relations.
  • Keeps current on news, arts, culture and other local and regional issues, demonstrating an interest in MATC students' ideas and experiences that shape their lives.
  • Support the College's public and media relations efforts through script writing, public relations messaging, editorial direction, publications, website, etc.
  • Adhere to departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines for communications, including MATC's brand image that maintains a consistent, professional image.
  • Practice honesty by demonstrating a consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles, values, truthfulness and accuracy in all actions.
  • Acts and speaks consistently with, and in support of, MATC's Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Addresses all student and employee behavior in a confidential and respectful manner.
  • Performs other related duties as required for the efficient operations of the division.


Qualifications

Required Education: Associate degree in Marketing, Mass Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field from an accredited college or university.Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in related field is preferred. Required Experience: Three (3) years minimum experience of reporter and copywriting experience.Preferred Experience: Four (4) or more years of relevant experience. COMPETENCIES

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of print production and editing as well as use of use of web and social media platforms to identify and tell stories..
  • Familiarity with libel rules, social media policies and best practices.
  • Demonstrated reporting and writing skills.
  • Skilled with social media including (but not limited to) platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Pinterest, Instagram and Tumblr and knowledge of social media best practices.
  • Experience in creating engagements, driving leads, and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) best practices.
  • Skilled at adding multimedia content to websites using web content standards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDSPhysical Demands: Ability to lift up to 25 lbs., carry, and push up to 20 lbs. and ability pull up to 50 lbs.

  • Sitting/Standing/Walking: 50% of time spent sitting, 25% of time standing, and 25% of time walking.
