Job Summary/Basic Function:
General Description:
Perform a variety of tasks required to clean and sanitize university buildings. Employees in this classification are required to perform manual labor with the assistance of various mechanical equipment. Each employee will be given an area assignment and will be responsible for routine cleaning of the floors, walls, furniture and fixtures, including trash removal and cleaning. Employee is also responsible for the care of machinery, tools, supplies, and equipment used in daily performance of job duties.

Examples of Work Performed:
  • Performs custodial tasks such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dust mopping, buffing, dusting, washing, sanitizing, and other related duties.
  • Performs cleaning tasks associated with the cleaning and sanitizing restrooms; mopping and scrubbing of restrooms.
  • Dust and sanitizing of offices and classroom furniture, walls, and windows; empty trash.
  • Performs tasks associated with carpet care to include extracting and bonnet buffing.
  • Employee is responsible for the reporting of deficiencies found in building conditions such as broken or missing furniture and equipment.
  • Employee is responsible for the building security as related to the locking and unlocking of doors to the building, laboratories, and offices.

    General Qualification Requirements:

    Education/License:
    Graduation from high school or vocational school, or any equivalent combination of experience, education, or training which provides the following knowledge, skill, and abilities.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Working knowledge of custodial or building cleaning methods and techniques.
    Ability to operate, maintains, and care for the equipment used in the fulfillment of these job duties.
    Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
    Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with fellow employees, faculty, staff, and students.
    Must have the knowledge of the hazards and required safety precautions associated with the use and operation of the equipment used in the work described above.
    Must demonstrate the skills required to operate the equipment described above.
    Must comply with the established University, and departmental rules and regulations.

    Physical Requirements:
    Must have physical ability to perform physical work in a normal custodial cleaning environment and tolerate the working conditions.

    o Lifting or Carrying: Routinely lifts over 5 lbs. and sometimes exceeds 25 lbs.
    o Pushing and Pulling: Routinely pushes mops, brooms, operated vacuums, dust mops, buffers, wet vacs, scrubbers, and buffers.

    o Running: Not required except in emergency situations
    o Sitting: Rarely
    o Climbing: Occasionally climbs ladders and frequently climbs stairs

    o Reaching: Routinely
    o Hand Use: Must be able to handle typical custodial maintenance tools, i.e. brooms, mops, brushes, vacuums, and scrubbers.
    o Sense of Touch: Must be able to sense heat, cold, or sharp objects.
    o Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively with or without the assistance of communication devices.
    o Vision: Must be able to work in normal lighted areas.

    Mental Requirements:
    Mathematics: Must be able to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide.
    Remembering: Must be able to follow and recall simple instructions.

    Language Ability:
    Reading: Must be able to comprehend written instructions.
    Writing: Must be able to write or print legibly to construct simple and compound sentences that can be understood by those of reasonable intelligence.
    Speaking: Must have ability to communicate with logic.
    Reasoning: Must be able to make simple decisions and request advice for more complex problems.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Experience:
    Prefer to have experience in the general and routine custodial maintenance of commercial or educational facilities, but is not necessary.

    Salary: $16,806.40
