Colby is in search of a dynamic, student-centered, community-building student affairs leader who will work in collaboration with students, staff, and faculty as director of the Pugh Center. The Pugh Center is a vibrant pivotal space for diversity, equity, and inclusion programs as well as a hub for student groups. As such, the Pugh Center serves as an important resource to Colby's residential campus community in building and supporting an inclusive environment. From this institutional focal point, the director of the Pugh Center will serve as a catalyst for the development and implementation of educational, social, and co-curricular programs that promote intercultural understanding and social justice, while providing academic and personal support to students from underrepresented groups. To that end, the director must be an innovative professional who works in close collaboration with an array of campus initiatives and offices such as the faculty-in-residence program, the College's civic and community engagement initiatives, global experience projects, and the first-year orientation planning process.

Reporting to the associate dean of diversity, equity, and inclusion, the director of the Pugh Center has overall leadership and management responsibility for services, facilities, staffing, day-to-day operations, and programming of the Center in support of the College's goal to develop and implement key strategic initiatives aimed at cultivating inclusive and equitable excellence as a fundamental value of our institutional mission. The director works in collaboration with the Gender and Sexual Diversity Program among other campus partners, including student activities and residential education to enhance the quality of underrepresented students' college experience through educational, social, and cultural programming as well as through leadership opportunities. Additionally, the director serves as a programming resource for cultural affinity student groups.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management

  • Develop a strategic plan to fulfill the goals of the Pugh Center in relation to the College's institutional commitment to inclusive excellence

  • Partner with other campus offices to develop infrastructure to better support needs of our increasingly diverse student body

  • Support and develop diversity, inclusion, and equity trainings for students, faculty, and staff

  • Convene and direct the Pugh Center advisory council

  • Review, develop, and conduct regular assessment of signature Pugh Center programs, including first-generation to college students program, student of color first-year transition program, and Bunche scholars program

  • Supervise full-time administrative and student staff

  • Gather data and prepare annual reports

  • Budget planning, oversight, and monitoring of expenditures

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Pugh Center

  • Serve in the on-call rotation responding to emergency situations and student academic concerns for 2-3 weeks each year, including evenings and weekends

  • Participate in evening and weekend programming, as required by the nature of our residential community


Program Planning

  • Develop and deliver programs that support historically underrepresented student groups on campus

  • Promote faculty, staff, and community involvement through intellectual, social, and cultural programs

  • Plan and implement programs that promote cultural awareness for the campus community

  • Assist in the promotion and integration of engagement, mentorship, and leadership programs in collaboration with other campus partners

  • Participate in student orientation including the planning process

  • Coordinate a mentoring program for first-year students to help with their transition and retention, including the selection and training of mentors and the recruitment of first-year protégés

  • Serve as a programming resource to cultural affinity groups


Collaboration

  • Serve as a resource to work collaboratively with other campus programs and offices such as the faculty-in-residence program, advising deans, civic engagement programs, career services and alumni relations, global experiences, etc.

  • Serve on campus-wide committees and working groups as needed, such as the bias incident prevention and response team (BIPR), the committee on diversity and inclusion, etc.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in education and experience; Master's degree in Educational Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, Multicultural Education, or related field preferred

  • Five years of experience in program administration and/or coordination in areas related to diversity and multicultural affairs

  • Knowledge of student development theory

  • Commitment to a student-centered approach and to building relationships with underrepresented students

  • Experience facilitating diversity trainings and workshops

  • Outstanding cultural competency with proven ability to work effectively with diverse populations

  • Highly developed skills in leadership training, advising, and supervising students

  • Demonstrated experience in planning and collaboration with students, staff, and faculty

  • Ability to work with people from all levels

  • Committed to the values of a liberal arts education

  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering meaningful results

  • Demonstrated experience in budget management, event and facilities management, program development and implementation

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication, and organizational skills


KEY RELATIONSHIPS:
This position has significant interaction with students, faculty, staff, families, and outside constituencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary.
