Dean, School of Business and Management

The College at Brockport, State University of New York, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Business and Management. The School of Business and Management is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA) for their public administration programs. The College seeks a visionary leader to facilitate a positive environment for teaching, scholarship, creative activity, research (both theoretical and applied), and service to the College and community. The Dean will be outward-looking and entrepreneurial in leading the School to new levels of success.

Founded in 1835, The College at Brockport is a nationally recognized four-year comprehensive public college focused on student success. The College is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The College is located in Brockport, NY, a college town of nearly 8,400 residents on the scenic and historic Erie Canal. The 464-acre campus is near downtown Rochester, a city known for philanthropy, high technology, and intellectual capital.

Faculty and staff advance the College mission of fostering student success through rigorous programs of academic study and through exceptional co-curricular programs and support services. The College enrolls 7,057 undergraduate and 1,230 graduate students in 49 undergraduate and over 50 masters' degree programs. Of the 328 full-time faculty, 88% hold a doctorate or other terminal degree.

The Department of Business Administration and Economics was established in 1971. The Department earned its initial accreditation from AACSB in 2002. Through a restructuring, the department became a School in 2011. The School was reaffirmed by AACSB in 2013 and in 2018. The Department of Public Administration is accredited by NASPAA. The School has a reputation for excellence in the preparation of its students for careers in business and public service and for close student-faculty interactions and collaborations. The School's 53 full- and part-time faculty work closely with nearly 1,100 undergraduate students pursuing degrees in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, International Business, and Marketing, and nearly 200 graduate students who pursue degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, and Public Administration.

The Position

The Dean is responsible for the quality and integrity of academic programs, managing the human and fiscal resources and physical facilities of the School, and is an advocate for students, faculty and staff. The Dean is also the spokesperson for the School on the campus, in the community, and beyond, and works collaboratively with the College leadership and other Deans and administrators. The Dean develops and works closely with the President's Cabinet to ensure productive community support and programmatic input. In addition, the Dean works cooperatively with Advancement in the continuing efforts to foster and maintain relationships with alumni and donors. The Dean is expected to engage in collaborative efforts with faculty committees, Department Chairs, and the Academic Affairs Leadership Team (AALT), College leadership, and industry/community partners to advance the Academic Plan and the College's and the School of Business and Management's Strategic Plan.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate/terminal degree in a discipline represented in the School or closely related field from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • An outstanding record of teaching, scholarship, publication, and service sufficient for tenure and rank of associate professor, preferably professor in an academic department with the School.
  • A successful record of academic administrative leadership and experience at the department level or above, to include such responsibilities as management of fiscal and personnel resources, academic program evaluation and review, strategic planning, and programs for student advisement, recruitment and retention.
    o Progressive experience in academic administration (department chair or higher level within a university).
    o Demonstrated and progressively increasing leadership and management experience in higher education that includes supervisory responsibility for teaching, scholarship and related activities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving students from diverse backgrounds, abilities and levels of preparation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to community engagement.
  • Ability to create a vision for the School and a practical understanding of strategic planning strategies.
  • Experience with budget development and the principles of sound fiscal management.
  • Experience with classroom teaching practices, teaching methodologies, scholarly activities, and the development of faculty and staff.
  • Ability to appropriately delegate responsibility and authority, make timely decisions, and solve problems.
  • Evidence of the ability to work well with people at all levels and build sustainable relationships across the college.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate faculty and staff and develop a collaborative environment that engages the entire institution, students and external partners and friends.
  • Demonstrated commitment to transparency and shared governance.
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation and intercultural communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • More than five years of progressively responsible administrative experience.
  • Experience with one or more external accreditation processes, such as AACSB, NASPAA, or Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
  • A record of receiving external grant funding from government, foundations or corporations.
  • Experience in a state system of higher education.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.
  • Excellent skills and aptitude in the following areas: collaboration, conflict resolution, decision-making, project management, leadership, innovation, teambuilding and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the fundamental values of the professoriate: academic freedom, peer review and shared governance.
  • Demonstrated record of successful external fundraising efforts.
