Position Summary
The University of the Incarnate Word (San Antonio, Texas) seeks qualified candidates for the Academic Dean of the School of Physical Therapy (SoPT). The Dean will be chief academic administrator of the School, report directly to the Associate Provost for Health Professions, and be a member of the Provost's Council and of the Health Professions Deans' Council.

As a member of the Provost's Council, the Dean will contribute to strategic operations and resources decisions that promote the welfare and success of the entire UIW system.

As the chief academic administrator of the SoPT, the Dean will be responsible for the long-term strategic planning and ethical management of the school's academic, fiscal, physical, and human resources. The Dean will promote academic excellence and innovation, scholarly activity, service, and faculty/staff professional growth and development, create and support strategic academic partnerships and collaborations with academic, and community institutions, and provide effective leadership in implementing the vision, mission, and strategic plan of the School and the University of the Incarnate Word. The Dean will cooperate with the Associate Provost for Health Professions in the determination of all policies and procedures related to the faculty of the School.

The Dean will provide leadership for the School, ensuring its growth and the academic excellence, scholarly activity, and community engagement consistent with the strategic initiatives of UIW. The SoPT currently houses an entry-level DPT program with a class size of 50 to be increased to 65 in 2022, and a community clinic offering physical therapy services to under- or uninsured individuals. The entry-level DPT program received its initial accreditation from the Commission of Accreditation for Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) in 2015, and a full 10-year reaccreditation in May 2020. The School is currently developing residency programs in sports, pediatric and neurologic physical therapy, has hired a program director for post-graduate education, and is in queue for offering a Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program in the Fall 2023.

This position is considered a Responsible Employee under Title IX federal regulations and Mandatory Reporter under Texas state law and The UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about violating Title IX. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Required Education
Earned academic (PhD, EdD, DSc) doctoral degree, and graduate of a CAPTE accredited physical therapy program.


Required Work Experience
The successful candidate will have significant teaching experience and a minimum of five (5) years of academic leadership in healthcare education, experience with CAPTE accreditation, and a proven record of both leadership and management of faculty.


Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will have at least five years of academic leadership and physical therapy education experience, a strong record of scholarly activity, an understanding of changing patterns in higher education and healthcare education, and a commitment to diversity.

Outstanding record of effective leadership in academic physical therapy.

Record of administrative achievement in financial and programmatic management.

Familiarity with emerging pedagogies in healthcare education.

Experience as part of an executive team.

Interprofessional administrative experience, preferably within a health sciences center or university with multiple professional programs.

An appreciation and support for the key role of shared governance.

Track record of involvement in national professional organizations, and accomplishment in leadership achieving national recognition.


Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
Licensed to practice physical therapy or eligible for licensure in the state of TX.

Member of the American Physical Therapy Association.
