Salary range for this position is: $83,000-85,000 annually (depending on experience)

This exempt position is responsible for directing and supervising the overall functions and programming of NSC Advising. The Director collaborates with the Dean of Student Success Services and personnel in Admissions/Registration/Credentials, Testing, Entry Services, Financial Aid Services, Student Leadership & Multicultural Services, PIO, International Services, BAS programming, Workforce Education, Institutional Effectiveness and Instructional deans and divisions in providing comprehensive advising services for students as it relates to the strategic plan and mission of North Seattle College. This position may work occasional evening hours as program needs demand.

What you will be working on:
  • Oversee the daily and overall operations (including budget planning and management) of NSC Advising, including the implementation and assessment of services and programming related to retention and completion for college transfer and professional-technical students.
  • Lead advising staff in the implementation and assessment of advising services and programming such as educational planning, advising interventions, areas of study advising, guided pathways, new student orientation, college transfer and professional-technical degree and transfer workshops, newsletters, classroom presentations, etc. to promote student retention and completion. Participate in appropriate college, district and state committees or list serves to maintain current knowledge of advising best practices and state higher education laws and policies.
  • Responsible for the development and revision of advising resources and promotional materials such as web pages, brochures, degree workshops, student degree planning guides, etc.
  • Provide oversight for advising information flow to students, staff, faculty and administrators, PIO, and the Seattle Colleges District, i.e. the Seattle College District catalog, changes in the AA and other transfer and professional technical degrees, transfer and baccalaureate institution requirements.
  • Administer and oversee enforcement of Student Progress policy for students on academic alert, probation, and suspension.
  • Collaborate with faculty on development of new degrees.
  • Represent NSC as a liaison to other institutions of higher education regarding institutional policies, degree, certificate, and program requirements and collaborate on the articulation of transfer credits, policies and agreements to facilitate the transfer of students between NSC and universities as well as serving on appropriate committees such as CAS-Curriculum and Academic Standards Committee, Washington State Advising & Counseling Council, SCD ctcLink committee and NSCC Student Services Council. Represent NSC and provide expertise regarding program requirements and transfer articulation/advising issues for college and district projects, meeting, and events.
  • Serve as a resource for staff/students with degree problems or challenges.
  • Provide student advising assistance as needed.
  • Provide overall management and supervision for advisors/student success specialists and classified staff including hiring, training, evaluation, performance reviews, scheduling, etc.


What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)
  • Master's degree in Education, Student Development, Counseling, Public Affairs or Higher Education Administration.
  • Two years minimum experience administering student services programs in higher education; including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Experience working with student advising and retention programs, advising best practices, innovations and advising technologies.
  • Proven track record of advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), such as organizing EDI activities, advocating for policy changes, community engagement, or self-advocacy.
  • Proven organizational, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with communicating and working respectfully and effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds, such as racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic, and with diverse physical and learning disabilities; fostering communication and collaboration across departments.
  • Strong understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
  • Proven leadership, supervisory and team building skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated; ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated experience with managing change, implementing new initiatives/projects and project management.


Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform range of physical motions, exerting up to 25 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; and traversing up and down stairs.
