Overview
Employment Status: Full-time, at-will, exempt position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).

Work Schedule: Generally, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Night and weekend shifts as necessary.

Salary Range: Depends on qualifications, targeted range is $95,000 to $110,000 per year.

As Director of Technology Operations, you will develop cohesive teams across multiple diverse, technical and operation functions (15 FTE), lead strategic and tactical initiatives and transformational service delivery of CSUSB's most critical information technology infrastructure.

As Director of Technology Operations, you will develop cohesive teams across multiple diverse, technical and operation functions (15 FTE), lead strategic and tactical initiatives and transformational service delivery of CSUSB's most critical information technology infrastructure.

Under general direction of the Deputy CIO, the Director will foster an environment of collegiality and cooperation within two departments (Telecommunication and Network Services, Enterprise and Cloud Services) and across other ITS departments.

The Director will serve as a trusted advisor and be responsible for the operational planning, infrastructure strategy and roadmap, and execution of core technologies that aligns with the broader IT and campus strategic plans. The Director's responsibilities may include:
  • Develop and implement processes and procedures to maximize effectiveness, efficiency and resiliency. Continue to lead the evolution into a cloud-based infrastructure as customer requirements and technologies change over time.
  • Forecast skill and competency needs and develop a forward-looking technology workforce.
  • Ensure teams' success and efficiency in service delivery through mentoring and coaching.
  • Oversee CSUSB's core IT infrastructure including network, telecommunication, system/server administration, and operation/ancillary services.
  • Create, manage, and monitor multiple concurrent projects relating to service improvements, expansion, and maintenance of existing infrastructure and resources.
  • Develop and monitor standards and metrics to ensure fair workloads and evaluations.
  • Engage with governance groups, systemwide groups, customers, outside experts, and other technical staff to develop key performance indicators and benchmarks.
  • Manage budgets, expenditures, and revenues in each area of accountability.
  • Create/modify position descriptions, conduct recruitments, performance appraisals, and work with Human Resources on disciplinary matters.
  • Work on divisional, campus-wide or system-wide projects at times.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Five (5) years of experience in Technical Project Management, Information Technology, or related disciplines.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory/management experience in the field of technology operations or related disciplines.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Highly collegial, consultative; ability to develop and sustain collaborative relationships with diverse teams; demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive excellence environment.
  • Encourage open communication with staff across teams, foster an atmosphere of trust; is open-minded and fair when handling conflicts.

  • Experience in building coalitions and professional relationships with internal and external constituencies, including vendor relationship management.
  • Knowledge of best practices, trends, techniques, and methods of information technology management.
  • Working knowledge of cloud service platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Broad operational knowledge of many of the following: computer and server hardware/software, virtualization technologies, networking, telecommunications, applications.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate data, interpret trends, and draw conclusions to prevent or resolve problems.
  • Business acumen and the ability to manage human, fiscal and information resources strategically.
  • Ability to make timely, informed decisions that take into account facts, goals, constraints, and risks.
  • Ability to apply creative and innovative thinking to develop fresh ideas and solutions to workplace challenges.
  • Project management skills to initiate, plan, execute, and evaluate projects.
  • Ability to write and implement policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines.
  • Ability to utilize problem solving skills when handling sensitive personnel matters.

Preferred:
  • Combination of business skills, emotional intelligence, and technical experience.
  • Experience leading a team in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Advanced degree in relevant or related fields.
  • Specific experience with current technology related to institutions of higher education.
  • Current technical certification in related fields such as cloud architecture.
  • Project management professional (PMP) and/or IT certifications such as ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library).


Supplemental Information

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
