Big Bend Community College (BBCC) is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Industrial Systems Technology (IST) Instructor position. This position is part of the Industry, Manufacturing, & Trades Division. We are looking for a person prepared and interested in teaching a variety of industrial systems courses for mechanical maintenance technology, mechatronics, and/or manufacturing students. The instructor will have responsibility for teaching courses; such as, machining; hydraulics; instrumentation; automation; mechanical power transmission; PLCs; hydraulic, pneumatic, & vacuum systems.

BBCC is a small rural community college located in the sunny, central part of Washington State, and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Big Bend Community College serves approximately 4,000 students, with an annualized FTE of approximately 2,000, in a 4,600-square-mile service district including 15 communities in Grant and Adams counties and the Odessa School District in Lincoln County with on-site, online instruction, and interactive classrooms.

Primary essential responsibilities include but will not be limited to the following:

• Prepare and teach Mechatronics, Mechanical Maintenance, and/or Manufacturing courses. Teaching assignments are based on college needs and include day, evening, weekend and on or off campus assignments.


• Provide access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.


• Maintain an educational environment that promotes student learning and success.


• Instruct, assist, and motivate students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.


• Adapt to a variety of teaching situations including diverse student abilities and preparedness.


• Demonstrate, teach, and enforce proper lab techniques and safe work habits and safety rules in the labs.


• Advise students; assist students in planning an educational program and in selecting courses, and when necessary refer students to appropriate student services for assistance.


• Participate as an active member of working committees dealing with instruction, college-wide and department assessment, student matters, and/or college related concerns.


• Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and be a positive contributing member of the campus community.


• Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth, development, and conduct.


• Remain current with subject matter (e.g. hydraulics, mechanical systems, pneumatics, PLCs, electrical energies, etc.), instructional methodology, educational technology, and emerging trends within industrial maintenance and repair.


• Participate in ongoing professional development related to industry certification of teaching and accreditation of the program under national standards.


• Develop and maintain positive and effective partnerships with industry.


• Provide advice and support for adjunct faculty in conjunction with the department.


• Maintain positive and effective communications with students, faculty, administration, and staff.


• Maintain required licensing and Washington s vocational teaching certification.


• Foster a flexible, healthy learning environment with respect for student diversity.


• Other duties as agreed to with division chair or administrator.

At the time of application, all applicants must possess the following:

• An Associate's degree in a relevant field (e.g. mechatronics, manufacturing, maintenance mechanic, etc.) and three years of professional experience or a minimum of five years professional experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.


• Experience working with students/workforce from diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.


• Documented industry training and/or industry-recognized mechatronics and/or mechatronics instructor certifications or the ability to attain them within six months of hire (e.g., NIMS, Allen Bradley, Siemens, Amatrol, FANUC).

• Experience with the operation of industrial automation and robotic equipment (e.g., Allen Bradley, Siemens, Amatrol, Fanuc) and/or systems integration.


• Experience teaching at a community college within the previous three years.


• Demonstrated knowledge of current theory and common practices in the trade and the ability to instruct students on these topics.


• Demonstrated knowledge of the role of the community college in education.


• Experience implementing innovative teaching methods such as inverted instruction, coordinated studies, team teaching, active learning, or computer-aided instruction.


• Experience with online learning, hybrid courses, and learning management systems.


• Experience working in a team-teaching environment.


• Able to communicate effectively one-on-one, in small groups, and in classroom settings.


• Experience working with non-traditional students.


• Demonstrated multicultural experience (fluency in other languages, work experience, or literary/cultural/travel experience) which add breadth and depth to teaching.


• Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency.
