Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY:


This position provides course development services to assist in designing innovative, engaging online courses. This individual works closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and academic Program Directors (PDs) to design high-quality learning experiences that align to program-level outcomes, course competencies, and learning objectives. This position also supports the design of formative and summative assessment materials. This role contributes to the selection and implementation of technology tools, platforms, and applications. This individual is involved in reviewing existing online courses and using data to suggest enhancements. The Instructional Designer will also make recommendations for improvement including aligning assessment materials, increasing the use of multimedia and collaborative activities, and developing strategies to increase student engagement. The Instructional Designer also assists in the implementation of new technologies into the University's Learning Management System (Canvas). In collaboration with PDs and SMEs, this individual ensures course structure meets organizational standards for quality and design. This individual works collaboratively with online learning support staff to achieve course development and faculty support goals. The position reports to the Director of Instructional Design & Faculty Development. This is a part-time, temporary staff position funded by the Strada Education Network grant. There is a possibility of contract renewal, pending grant funding. Candidates local to Springfield, MA preferred; remote options possible.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:



  • Work collaboratively with technologists, subject matter experts, and program directors throughout the online course development process.

  • Recommend process improvements for course design projects.

  • Work collaboratively to track the delivery of work products in course development projects using standard tracking tools and standard tagging and coding mechanisms.

  • Report regularly to key stakeholders on the progress of course development projects.

  • Build course content in a variety of platforms.

  • Provide thorough course quality assurance reviews ensuring that online courses are built according to standard design principles.

  • Assess learning analytics and other data sources, both quantitative and qualitative, to evaluate course performance metrics.

  • Establish and maintain an effective and efficient working relationship with key stakeholders throughout the University.

  • Assist in the development of video and text-based tutorials to assist students, faculty, and staff in using educational technologies.

  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices in online education, instructional technology, and learning analytics.

  • May be required to attend and participate in meetings to review current and new projects.

  • May be required to attend and participate in conference meetings, as needed, with subject matter experts, as well as faculty and staff.

  • May be required to attend trainings.

  • Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned by the University.



Requirements:



  • Master's degree in Instructional Design, Education, Learning Analytics or a related field required.

  • College level teaching experience demonstrating use of educational technology; online/distance teaching experience preferred.

  • Experience with designing and building on-ground, hybrid, and online course content within learning management systems (LMS) (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, etc.).

  • Experience exploring, testing, and integrating third-party tools within a given LMS.

  • Confidence in providing recommendations regarding all aspects of the course design and development process, including decisions about interface design, course architecture and navigation, content arrangement, sequencing of lessons, use of assessments, and selection of class activities.

  • Experience with implementing changes to courses based on faculty feedback, course evaluation data and peer review to enhance student learning outcomes.

  • Experience working with faculty and other instructional designers to design and develop learning solutions, determine appropriate course assessments, and conduct research to validate best practices.

  • Demonstrated experience with educational technology and content development tools and e-learning authoring tools.

  • Experience using metrics and student-generated data to drive course redesign.

  • Working knowledge of online education related frameworks such as Quality Matters and OLC Quality Scorecard.

  • Web development experience, multimedia recording and editing skills, and basic knowledge of programming languages preferred.

  • Experience supporting both Windows and Mac operating systems.

  • Experience in a higher education environment, preferably in an instructional design or instructional technology role.

  • Online teaching experience, preferably within the higher education environment.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and successfully complete tasks according to established deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and teamwork skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in teaching or training situations to a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and within FERPA and HIPPA guidelines.

  • All new employees must complete the FERPA and Anti-Harassment online trainings within 15 days of employment.

  • Ability to adhere to University policies and procedures.
