POSITION PURPOSE:

Under general supervision of Dean, Antelope Valley, the Academic Advisor provides basic academic advising to CSUB Antelope Valley students following well established polices and procedures. In addition, the Advisor provides support services that will promote retention and success of students served by Antelope Valley.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Academic Advising
    1. Provides basic advisement to new and continuing CSUB-AV students individually or in a group setting on degree planning, course selection, and graduation requirements.
    2. Explains university degree requirements, academic policies, procedures, and regulations, exploring choice of academic major, career interests, etc.
    3. Assists with educational planning.
  2. Academic Progress Monitoring
    1. Assists with monitoring student academic progress towards degree and facilitating solutions to problems related to academic progress.
    2. Responds to faculty alerts after following up with students on issues that may be impeding progress.
    3. Uses tools to evaluate student progress and proactively work with students who are off track from graduating.
  3. Caseload Records
    1. Initiates and maintains caseload records and documents student contacts utilizing Runnerconnect/EAB Navigate or similar e-advising technologies if vendor changes.
    2. Keeps records of advising appointments and recommendations to students.
    3. Uses myCSUB to update student and applicant records as needed.
  4. Enrollment Management Support
    1. Provides Enrollment Management services including admission, adding, and dropping classes, and transcript evaluation as needed for CSUB-AV applicants.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or job-related field and one (1) year of related experience. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the appropriate knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Equivalent amounts of graduation level job-related education may be substituted for the required experience.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA's) –
    • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
    • Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management; research and interviewing techniques.
    • Knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
    • Ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organization, procedures, and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned.
    • Knowledge of basic principles, practices, and major trends in the Student Services field to which assigned.
    • Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program and its relationship to the total campus operation.
    • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, gather, and analyze data, reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
    • Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports.
    • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
    • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
    • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
    • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
    • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
    • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
    • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
    • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Competence with Runnerconnect/EAB, PeopleSoft advising tools, and social media platforms for promotion of advising and retention efforts.
    • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: SEDENTARY WORK – involves mainly sitting; minimal walking and standing; lifting light weight objects limited to 15 pounds.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
