ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $21.72 per hour

CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $21.72 - $26.57 (based on 20 hours per week)

POSITION PURPOSE:

Under direct supervision of the Director of Study Abroad and Fulbright Programs Office, the AL Student Services Professional provides trainee level assistance with the study abroad and Fulbright programs following well established policies and procedures. In addition, the incumbent updates program social media and websites.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Study Abroad Program Assistance
    1. Assist Study Abroad Programs Director with hosting inbound exchange students. Duties include:
      1. Conducting orientation for inbound exchange students on the CSU Chancellor's Office International Exchange Programs.
      2. Putting dorm supply items into bags containing bed sheets, towels, trash can, toilet paper, silverware, mug and hangers, for the number of students who will stay in the residence halls.
      3. Taking dorm supply bags to the housing office and distributing them to the students.
      4. Assisting students in acclimating to dorm life and campus life. Helping students find service-learning volunteer opportunities on campus and off campus. Assisting in familiarizing students with local community.
      5. Collecting necessary documents from the outbound exchange student candidates.
    2. Select appropriate courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs, contact professors who teach the courses and organize visit to class to provide information on study abroad opportunities.
    3. Following well established policies and procedures, represent the Global Outreach department (Study Abroad Office and American Language Institute) in person and via email to provide informational sessions and orientations.
    4. Answer general questions from freshman and transfer students during orientation breakout sessions about CSUB study abroad opportunities.
  2. EEGO International Student Assistance
    1. Assist EEGO international students with adaptation to campus life through assisting with moving into dorms, retrieving ID cards, conducting campus tours, etc.
    2. Social and enrichment events planning, chaperoning international students to such events. Events include but not limited to, home athletic games, brown bag events, performing arts events, and cultural festivals off campus.
  3. Social Media
    1. Update social media posts and website pages with articles.
    2. Take photos at events and post to program social media and websites with appropriate captions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE –

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field, and some experience in student services. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the appropriate knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job-related education may be substituted for the required experience.

LICENSES – Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA's) –
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • General knowledge of social media and website posting.
  • Working knowledge in basic photography, videography and editing.
  • Ability to display sensitivity and compassion toward students from other cultures and willingness to understand perspectives of those different from yours.
  • Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Knowledge of research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information.
  • Knowledge of the techniques and methods of interviewing.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences, and interviews.
  • Ability to clearly express ideas and recommendations orally and write clear and concise reports.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.

  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficiency in one or more foreign languages and experience working with various cultures and individuals from other countries.
  • One (1) year of experience working with international students and/or study abroad programs.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: LIGHT WORK – involves mainly sitting, up to 25% standing or walking; lifting medium weight objects limited to 25 pounds.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
