The College of Arts, Letters and Education invites applications for a special faculty/lecturer position in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures to begin mid-September, 2019.


Responsibilities will include teaching courses in the areas of Japanese language and culture.

The Modern Languages and Literatures Department is seeking a colleague with a strong commitment to students, collegiality, and professional standards.


The faculty member hired for this position will be welcomed into an academic community dedicated to cultural diversity, community engagement, and social justice.


Teaching: a typical workload for this position will involve 45 credits per academic year, subject to department needs.


Additionally, all faculty are expected to actively participate in assessment of student learning and to engage in effective teaching.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Japanese or Asian Studies with concentration in Japanese, or other degree relevant to the position



  • Native or near native Japanese proficiency



  • Two years of experience teaching Japanese at the college level full time, or the cumulative equivalent of it spread over a longer period of time; prefer more than two years experience



  • Competency in teaching contemporary Japanese culture (society, films, literature, etc.)



  • Commitment to a communicative approach in language teaching



  • Familiarity with ACTFL assessment and guidelines



  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal accessibility, of our students, faculty, staff and the public




Preferred Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who offer the following preferred qualification:



  • Experience teaching contemporary Japanese culture (society, films, literature, etc.)
