The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program provides underrepresented, first-generation, and low income students with resources, guidance, and support that leads them on the path towards earning doctoral degrees. The program is open to full-time undergraduate students from all disciplines.


Basic Function:
Under general direction of the Associate Provost, the Program Director provides leadership, oversight, and coordination of the McNair Scholars Program (MSP), funded by a 5-year grant by the U.S. Department of Education TRIO office. The Program Director will serve as chief administrator of the project, conducting financial management, budget oversight and allocation, personnel recruitment and management, and oversee the fulfillment of program objectives including identifying first-generation, low-income students as well as students underrepresented in graduate education to participate in the program.

The McNair Scholars Program Director is grant funded through the Department of Education. The continuation of this position is contingent upon the continued receipt of these funds.

The position will likely be conducted remotely thru the end of 2020.


Representative Duties:
Provide leadership, management and administrative direction for the McNair Scholars Program (MSP); program oversight /compliance. E

Manage the MSP grant budget; prepare annual budgets; authorize expenditure of funds ensuring the appropriate utilization of funds. E

Work closely and collaboratively with the McNair Principal Investigator to accomplish project objectives; work closely with Faculty who serve as McNair Faculty Mentors. E

Assemble the McNair Advisory Council and lead semi-annual meetings intended for program and process improvement. E

Ensure that the McNair Scholars Program complies with all institutional and federal TRIO guidelines, policies, and regulations. E

Ensure that students are matched with faculty mentors and will develop and oversee a rigorous program focused on research production and preparation for graduate study. E

Serve as Liaison to U.S. Department of Education TRIO office on matters concerning the McNair Scholars Program. E

Orchestrate the McNair Scholars Research Symposium during the summer component. E

Collaborate with Career Services to administer career and graduate education inventories to students; collaborate with Career Services and Faculty to identify internship opportunities for McNair Scholars. E

Conduct the McNair Scholars nomination and selection processes. E

Develop and execute weekly seminar for McNair Scholars during the academic year and summer components of the program, to include GRE prep. E

Develop and implement an evaluation program that tracks McNair Scholars progress towards objectives during baccalaureate and postbaccalaureate matriculation. E

Collaborate with campus programs such as the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship (OURCS), Student Support Services, and the ALLIES in STEM program to enhance program offerings for participants across all programs; seek strategies to increase efficiencies and eliminate duplicate efforts. E

Collaborate with the Office of Sponsored Research & Projects on grant development and submissions. E

Coordinate with Undergraduate Admission, Financial Aid, and the Office of Educational Effectiveness and Institutional Research (EEIR) for purposes of recruiting students and verifying eligibility of students to participate in program. E

Work with the Business Office on account reconciliation, budget changes, etc; collaborate with Grant Accounting and Business staff to ensure proper disbursement of student and faculty stipends, student travel stipends, and conference participation awards. E

Provide academic and professional advising and mentoring on a regular basis to McNair Scholars. E

Guide students as they develop graduate career plans; monitor student progress toward plan goals. E

Devise evaluation and monitoring strategies to properly assess student outcomes; collect and review periodic reports from Faculty Mentors; track students during post baccalaureate careers. E

Prepare semi-annual and annual program and financial reports; prepare all grant fiscal and progress reports as required. E

Program Implementation; program administration; program evaluation and reporting; public relations. E

Student Development Design and execute Mentor Orientation/Training sessions. E

Develop systems to keep University informed of program activities. E

Work with University Marketing and Website teams to produce information materials in print and online. E

Represent Cal Lutheran and the McNair Scholars Program at conferences and events. E

Staff Supervision and professional Development; supervise, direct and evaluate McNair staff. E

Attend TRIO conferences and participate in professional development opportunities. E

Work with directors of campus programs focused on student retention and completion (Student Support Services, ALLIES in STEM, etc.) to establish in-house professional development sessions. E

interprets and ensures compliance with University policies, the Education Department General Administrative Regulations (EDGAR), the Government Performance and Results Act (GERPA), and the General Educational Provisions Act (GEPA). E

Keep abreast of current trends and practices in serving students underrepresented in graduate education. E

Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: A Research doctorate and two years of grant management experience with experience supporting diverse populations of students.


Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience with the McNair Scholars Program as a participant, staff member, faculty mentor, or administrator.

Experience demonstrating the utilization of effective practices supporting the enrollment of low-income, first-generation, and/or underrepresented university students into postbaccalaureate programs.

Experience designing and conducting GRE preparation workshops.

Experience succeeded and overcoming the disadvantages and circumstances like those of the targeted population served by the McNair Scholars Program.
