Description

DEFINITION:

To provide specialized assistance in the areas of technical support for the Mass Communications and Journalism Departments. The position supports the equipment for aiding in supervision of print newspaper, digital media, and social media production, while ensuring proper use of programs and journalistic standards for campus media. This position will assume a lead role in assisting hands-on academic support to students and instructors in the mass communications/journalism program.

This position is categorically funded for 5 years by the Strong Workforce Program. When funds are reduced or eliminated, the position will also be reduced or eliminated.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from an assigned supervisor.

Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Provide specialized assistance in the areas of technical support for the Mass Communications and Journalism Departments.
  2. Administer and maintain the operations of assigned audio, video, digital media and newspaper production laboratories.
  3. Provides in lab support, including group and individual training on multimedia equipment, specifically relating to best practices for using video cameras, audio devices and related hardware/software.
  4. Serve as liaison between students and instructor; confer with instructors regarding academic progress of specific students; inform instructor of certain questions being asked and discuss various academic matters.
  5. Troubleshoot software and hardware problems, (system and equipment), including testing and debugging program changes.
  6. Coordinate and oversee the operations of the lab, including equipment inventory; maintains lab policies and standards.
  7. Oversees students in writing, design and multimedia endeavors.
  8. Schedule and support movement of stories and content to campus media websites and social media channels.
  9. Conduct laboratory orientation and explain laboratory and program procedures, goals and objectives; obtain student information and educational background.
  10. May assist in work related to department business, such as document creation, editing, answering phones or emails, or posting updated information to Web pages as needed.
  11. Work a flexible schedule as needed.
  12. Perform related duties as required.


Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Basic operations, services and activities of a college multimedia lab.
  • Various software programs such as Adobe Creative Suite 17, particularly InDesign, Photoshop, Audition and Premiere.
  • Various journalistic writing style for print and online, including AP Style Guidelines.
  • Newspaper, video, digital media, social media and other modern communication resources.
  • Pertinent codes, laws and regulations of media and journalistic ethics.
  • Basic operations and services of newspaper production.
  • Principles and procedures of web publishing.
  • Principles and procedures of newspaper pagination and conceptual page design.
  • Principles and procedures of newspaper pagination and conceptual page design.
  • Basic fundamentals of digital photography.
  • Various online content management systems, including WordPress and cloud-based drives (Google Drive, DropBox).
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Proper language usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Appropriate and effective communication and listening skills.

Ability to:
  • Effectively utilize computer hardware/software or assigned instructional laboratories.
  • Learning general and specialized software pertaining to job.
  • Provide academic support to students, faculty and staff.
  • Explain proper use of media and mediums pertaining to journalistic storytelling.
  • Provide technical support services to all students, staff and faculty across the campus.
  • Provide instruction and assistance to end users on software applications.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both oral and written.
  • Inspect electronic equipment for repair.
  • Lift 30-50 pounds and sit for a prolonged period of time.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Sensitivity to and understand diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
  • Work cooperatively with students, staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Education:

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in journalism, communications or digital media production.

Experience:

Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience, in the professional or college newspaper preferred, or related journalistic ethics and multimedia production.
