Job Summary / Basic Function
General Description:
This Network Specialist III position performs network duties and assumes the same level of responsibilities. Work involves the implementation, maintenance, and monitoring of local area networks, wide area networks, wireless networks, and remote network locations for Lamar Institute of Technology, both voice and data. Work also involves performing basic network security tasks such as vulnerability scanning and firewall administration. This position works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. May train others.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential:
  • Maintain the LAN, WAN, wireless, and perimeter network, including physical and logical structures, to include
    o Monitor the operational network environment and takes corrective measures to ensure efficient performance.
    o Perform tuning and capacity planning activities to enhance the performance of the network resources.
    o Maintain current and accurate documentation of existing and future network infrastructure.
    o Troubleshoot and resolve network communication problems.
    o Operate and test network software and hardware configurations.
  • Configure, monitor, and maintain the security solutions utilized on the network, including but not limited to VPN, firewalls, and vulnerability scanners.
  • Maintain all campus credit card terminals and pay to print kiosks.
  • Maintain documentation of network security and risk analysis activities.
  • Serve as a technical specialist and work with LIT Help Desk personnel to solve system and/or network problems.
  • Oversee work and performance of subcontractors engaged in projects in order to ensure compliance with work orders.
  • Produce reports for management.

    Non-Essential:
  • Assist in the support of campus VoIP system.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of network projects.
  • Assist in the development of network and security standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist with the development of training, policies, and procedures for use at network facilities.
  • Assist in designing and deploying security infrastructure.
  • Assist in the development of information technology disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
  • Perform related work as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Working knowledge of (Cisco and Meraki) network facilities, personal computer hardware and software, current technological developments/trends, network security practices and procedures, monitoring and management tools, TCP/IP networking, and IP telephony concepts.
    Skill and ability to analyze and resolve network problems, maintain and troubleshoot network components, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and operate various office equipment such as a computer, copy machine, fax machine and multi-line telephone.

    Physical demands:
    Perform manual labor associated with repair and servicing of telecommunications and business equipment which may include:

    Frequently lift, push, pull, and/or carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift, push, pull, and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
    Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, reach, and use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel.
    Occasionally required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

    Work Environment:
    Frequent work in a typical office environment with moderate noise.
    Some work outside of an office setting, which may include tight spaces.
    Some work outside normal business hours as business needs dictate
    Occasional work at remote sites.

    General Qualifications:
    Graduation from a two-year accredited institution with an information technology-related degree.
    Experience with (Cisco and Meraki) LAN and/or WAN systems using Cisco /Meraki hardware and software is required.
    Valid drivers license is required.


    Preferred Qualifications
    Preferred Qualifications:
    Graduation from a four-year accredited institution with an information technology-related degree.
    Experience with (Cisco and Meraki) LAN and/or WAN systems using Cisco /Meraki hardware and software is required.
    Relevant networking certifications (Network+)
    Experience with Microsoft Windows Active Directory.
