About the Opportunity:
The Outreach Coordinator oversees the Marine Science Center's Outreach Program and develops and implements intellectually rewarding and effective educational programs that promote science literacy in youth and society, and foster interest among youth in the study of marine science and related careers. These goals are principally met by the continued support and development of K-12 academic programs (e.g., the Coastal Ocean Science Academy, School 2 Sea) that emphasize the cutting edge research being conducted by the MSC's faculty, postdoctoral fellow, and graduate students. The Outreach Coordinator will also provide MSC researchers with updated documents that highlight programmatic successes and describe the deliverables provided by outreach programs that can enhance the broader impacts of local, state and federal grant applications. As part of this endeavor, the Coordinator will independently, and collaboratively with MSC researchers, develop programs that enhance PI grant applications and their broader impacts beyond the status quo. The Outreach Coordinator will promote the research accomplishments of the MSC and College and enhance the scientific literacy of, and communication with, the public by organizing and hosting special events (e.g. the Riser Lecture, Open House), disseminating news on the achievements of the MSC and College via an up-to-date web site, promotional brochures, newsletters and other technologically relevant media. The Outreach Coordinator will create an inclusive and diverse community at the MSC through supporting the Diversity and Inclusion Committee efforts, and promoting community building activities. These efforts should also be used to assist the Director and Dean with the cultivation of advancement that supports the research and teaching goals of the MSC Strategic Plan.

1. Oversee science literacy programs with PreK-12 youth: Ensure Outreach staff deliver the MSC's core place-based programs relating to rocky shore ecology and basic marine biology, including the Coastal Ocean Science Academy. Enhance quality of community-based programs serving the needs of youth (particularly K-12), in underserved areas. Develop online or portable K-12 teaching resources for local teachers that strongly integrate the research of MSC faculty. To achieve this latter goal and remain up to date, the Coordinator should take advantage of intellectual resources provided by faculty, post doc and graduate student seminars and discoveries they publish in the literature.

2. Enhance and facilitate the broader impacts research activities at the MSC A key feature to the success of nationally competitive research grants is their broader impacts, which should be served by the Outreach Program. The Coordinator will annually provide updated broader impacts documents to MSC researchers that can be incorporated into federal and foundation grant applications that describes the scope of the outreach program with metrics on types of outreach programs, staffing, the number of participating local institutions, numbers of students, the demographic nature of the target audience, and the synergistic outcomes of research-outreach integration. Develop and describe novel strategies that challenge the status quo with respect to how outreach activities can enhance the broader impacts of research programs.

3. Implement a robust communications and public relations strategy that promotes the work of the MSC and College: Actively promote the work of the MSC and College with broad spectrum of approaches (e.g., MSC website, via local media outlets, the dissemination of brochures and newsletters. These efforts should focus on the results of ongoing research programs and funding successes. Work closely with COS and Central Marketing and Communications teams to maintain accurate and relevant web and media presence for the Marine Science Center. Host opportunities to connect the general public with University research, teaching, and outreach through activities such as lectures, film, open houses. Sit on MSC D&I Committee and create opportunities to build and support MSC community. Assist the Director and Dean with advancement activities that will cultivate prospects to support the research and teaching missions of the MSC Strategic Plan.

4. Outreach Program oversight: Prepare reports on budgets, grants, and other fiscal matters for the Business and Operations Manager. Ensure compliance of program operations with University legal and risk management protocols and recommendations. Maintain aquaria, equipment, and other teaching resources. Cultivate donor funds and apply for private, state and Federal grants to support academic programs. Ensure highest program quality with regular program evaluations, which should include the development and implementation of immediate and longitudinal performance metrics. Every 5 years, solicit an independent review of the overarching pedagogical philosophy of the program. Recruit, manage, and evaluate part-time staff.

5. Promote the training and professional development of science educators and community partners: Regularly mentor career-starters such as coop students, Americorps fellows, and graduate student interns. Enhance the capacity of community partners to implement effective science education programs in out-of-school settings. Provide professional development opportunities for formal and informal educators based on the resources of the College and the MSC. Support and participate in professional networks of science educators to attract collaborative funding, motivate staff, and contribute to relevant regional science education efforts.
Essential
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in science, education, marine biology, or related field. Two to four years of experience running science-based outreach programs. Experience with curriculum development, including alignment with national and state Pre-K-12 learning standards. Knowledge of and research experience with New England intertidal and subtidal marine ecology and current, relevant technology. Experience with current lab and field methods employed by marine scientists. Experience marketing and promoting science to the general public, particularly using technologically relevant media; and experience and comfort with public speaking. First Aid and CPR certified. Must be willing to be subjected to Criminal Record Checks (CORI) as required by schools.
Preferred Qualifications:
Scuba certification and AAUS Scientific Diver certification preferred, and related local experience in New England preferred.
