Job Summary
Provide exceptional customer service and support to Kellogg Eye Center patients, families, providers and team members. Duties include scheduling, arriving and clerical processing for patients within Kellogg Eye Center's Multiple Clinics, with the opportunity to develop higher level skills in reconciliation of collections, and managing work queues. Candidate should expect cross training on all office duties and be able to assume different PSA roles as needed.

Responsibilities*
  • Provide check in and check out services to patients
  • Schedule patients for consultations in other clinic diagnostic studies and ambulatory surgery, determining the sequence and coordinating times
  • Instruct patients on preparations needed for appointments
  • Complete financial documents including type of visit, reason for service, charge for service and diagnostic code
  • Collect cash and credit card payments from patients using established guidelines to determine patient pay portion, insurance portion or professional courtesy
  • Provide information to patients regarding billing procedures
  • Determine the necessity within established guidelines for immediate attention conditions of an emergent nature
  • Reconcile clinic cash collections daily and making daily bank deposit

Required Qualifications*
  • Associate level: 2-3 years of related experience.
  • Assistant level: 0-2 years of related experience.
  • High School diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
  • This position requires excellent customer service skills.
  • Cheerful and energetic individual, motivated with a positive and professional attitude.
  • Must be a team player with ability to take direction and communicate with peers and patients courteously and respectfully at all times.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a high volume area is necessary.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal, written and information technology communication skills.
  • Must be very comfortable working with computers and have a general knowledge of office practices.
  • Requires flexibility in all aspects of work assignments.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability are required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Demonstrates active listening.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Some college preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is helpful.
  • Previous experience with computerized scheduling systems, basic computer applications, and multi-phone lines is desired.
  • Knowledge of medical records, appointment scheduling systems and medical terminology preferred.

Work Schedule
Dependent upon staffing needs.

Underfill Statement
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
