Responsibilities*
Pharmacy Technician duties in the inpatient area may include:
  • Enter medication orders into patient profiles
  • Fill and deliver unit dose carts, make other deliveries
  • Assist with use of automated unit dose dispensing machine (RobotRx)
  • Prepare sterile products, injections and IV chemotherapy
  • Retrieve medication orders from patient units
  • Stock medications shelves, return excess stock to inventory
  • Fill Omnicell cabinets on nursing units
  • Prepare and package non-sterile compounded pharmaceuticals
  • Correctly distribute controlled substances
  • Prepare and deliver investigational drugs per research protocols
  • Resolve billing errors, process billing for medications not dispensed through Worx
  • Respond to telephone inquiries
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor to assist with preparation and delivery of patient medications
  • Assist with training of staff
  • Complete special projects as assigned by supervisor

Required Qualifications*
  • Pharmacy Technician Associate:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
    • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
    • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability.
  • Pharmacy Technician Intermediate:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
    • One or more years of relevant pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
    • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
    • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability
  • Pharmacy Technician Senior
  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
  • Two or more years of relevant pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability

Desired Qualifications*
  • At least one year technician experience or completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program is highly desirable.
  • Basic algebra also highly desired.

Licensure & Certification
The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed.

Newly hired pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain employment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician.
