Job Summary
The Administrative Core within the Institute for Social Research (ISR) is a newly created group designed to support three centers: Center for Political Studies, Research Center for Group Dynamics and the Population Studies Center. ISR is seeking a Research Administrator to provide pre- & post-award support for this Administrative Core. In this role, you will support accomplished Research Faculty and their teams in managing the proposal preparation and post award requirements for their projects. The Research Administrator will be part of a supportive, community oriented team of experienced research administrators providing complex and full range life-cycle research administration services. You will report to the Research Administration Senior Manager of the Administrative Core.

Responsibilities*
Post-award management:
  • Review award information with faculty and project teams to determine reporting requirements and/or billing complexities. Create revised budgets based on the awarded budget.
  • Initiate and process subcontracts and other service agreements including drafting sole source justifications and oversee invoice payments.
  • Process post award changes including time extensions, Uniform Guidance (UG) approvals, carry forward requests, and sponsor reporting requests.
  • Maintain annual calendars to assure timely completion of annual sponsor reports and assisting with the completion of and reviewing of reports prior to submission. Provide assistance in drafting the administrative pieces of sponsor interim and final reports

Financial management:
  • Set up, monitor and forecast financial status of active projects (project grants and sub project grants) including managing multiple budget changes, carry forward requests, and rebudgeting awarded funds for emerging priorities.
  • Review project expenses to determine allowability and appropriateness including researching erroneous charges and taking corrective action.
  • Prepare financial analyses and reports of sponsored and non-sponsored spending. Provide complex projections as requested by Research Faculty. Review and timely completion of Financial Status Reports (FSRs) and sponsor required financial reporting.

Pre-award management:
  • Work closely with the Research Faculty to develop, prepare and submit proposals, some involving multi-site budgets, consortium agreements and other partnership arrangements to National Institutes of Health (NIIH), National Science Foundation (NSF) and a variety of Foundation and Corporate sponsors.
  • Develop itemized budgets and guide faculty on appropriate budgetary items to include in proposal submissions ensuring proposal and budget compliance with federal, University, ISR and center specific rules and regulations.
  • Organize all proposal documentation and submit via the UM Electronic Research Management System (eRPM), Grants.gov, Fastlane and other Sponsor systems.
  • Maintain sponsor specific Biosketches and Current and Pending Other Support for assigned faculty

Compliance
  • Assist with the creation and management of Unfunded Agreements/Data Use Agreements (UFA/DUA) in eRPM
  • Assist with drafting administrative pieces for Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications for human subjects studies
  • Additional administrative responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications*
  • A Bachelor degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, with a minimum 5 years of research administration experience (or 3 years for Intermediate level) in an academic setting.
  • A financial background with intermediate to advanced Excel skills (can maintain complex spreadsheets) and extensive experience with complex proposal preparation, projection reporting and complex post-award management.
  • Experience using MPathways Financials & Physical Resources Systems (or a similar system) and Microsoft Office or Google products.
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability and ability to make independent decisions on matters of significance, within the scope of responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated success with complex proposals submissions and post-award management of complex awards.
  • The ability to organize complex information and manage competing deadlines, while being flexible and professional.
  • Knowledge of UM financial practices, policies, procedures, and regulations is strongly preferred, especially regarding procurement, sponsored programs, contract administration, and sponsored billing, but not required.
  • Experience representing unit to both internal and external audiences desired, but not required.

The interview process may include a writing sample and Excel sample for the final candidates.

Underfill Statement
This position may be underfilled at the Senior or Intermediate classification depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. The proposed salary ranges for each classification are:

Research Administrator Intermediate $54,000 - $68,000

Research Administrator Senior $68,000-$78,000
