Seattle Promise Retention Specialist

Position Summary:
This is a full-time, exempt position at the Seattle Colleges. This position assists the Director of Advising at South Seattle College and is responsible for providing enrollment and retention assistance to Seattle Promise students. This position provides direct advising services to all students and specializes in the development, coordination, and facilitation of Seattle Promise retention-related programming including but not limited to Readiness Academy and Summer Bridge programming, mandatory quarterly check-ins, satisfactory academic progress navigation, and other activities related to encouraging student persistence. The Student Success Specialist will assist the Director of Advising and the Seattle Promise Director with program development, data collection and analysis, and implementing strategies associated with retaining students leading to successful completion of a degree or credential. This position will be expected to work occasionally in the evening as program needs demand.

Essential Functions:
This position supports Seattle Promise students by assisting with the enrollment process, providing programming and interventions aimed at promoting student retention and completion, explaining program eligibility requirements to students, and assessing student progress toward Seattle Promise milestone achievement. This position collaborates with staff across the campus and district to lead retention initiatives to enhance student persistence and completion in Seattle Promise and serves as a point of contact for enrolled Seattle Promise students and college staff for questions about the program. This position assists Seattle Promise students with the development of their educational, career, and life goals and advises Seattle Promise students with course selection and the development of individualized educational plans. This position participates in advising programming and interventions aimed at promoting student retention and completion, including but not limited to planning and facilitating workshops, classroom presentations, group and individual check-ins, and Summer Bridge programming.

Required Education, Experience & Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education, student development, psychology, human relations, or related field.
  • Two years experience or equivalent advising college and/or high school students in an education or social services setting.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines while being attentive to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience with working effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds, such as racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic, and with diverse physical and learning disabilities.
  • Proven highly motivated, self-starter, flexible; ability to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Familiarity and proficiency with various technologies, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, student database systems and student success technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize sound professional judgment.
