Senior Director, Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good (McCarthy Center)

Job Summary:
The Senior Director has primary responsibility for administering the McCarthy Center and its
programs, subject to the limitations set forth in the McCarthy Center Charter and
College or University policies and procedures. The Provost shall conduct an annual
evaluation of the Director in accordance with University policies and procedures. This
appointment is scheduled to begin Fall 2020.

The Senior Director of the McCarthy Center is responsible for advancing the strategic plan and
overseeing all areas of work with the scope of the Center. In order to fashion a more
humane and just world, the mission of the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service
and the Common Good is to educate leaders committed to lives of ethical public service
by implementing academically rigorous programs, cultivating authentic community
partnerships, and creating transformational experiences. The Mission, Vision and Values
of the Center embody the Vision of USF to The University of San Francisco will be
internationally recognized as a premier Jesuit Catholic, urban University with a global
perspective that educates leaders who will fashion a more humane and just world.
The Center is structurally located within the Office of the Provost and provides programming
and support for numerous university-wide programs. In collaboration with McCarthy
Center staff, the Director serves as a campus and community resource on public service,
best practices in campus-community partnerships, community-engaged learning and
civic engagement and uses these skills to support the Vision, Mission and Values of the
Center. In addition, the Director works with Center staff to maintain liaisons with local
community partners including elected officials, government agencies, community-based
organizations and funders.

Full Job Description:

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Internal operations.

Responsible for the smooth functioning of the McCarthy Center.
Supervise McCarthy Center staff, including direct supervision of the Director of
Community-Engaged Learning, Director of Engage San Francisco, Director of
External Relations and Program Assistant. Support professional development
opportunities for staff and conduct annual appraisals. Make recommendations
regarding staff structure and job duties to Human Resources. Plan and facilitate staff
meetings and retreats, and support professional development of staff. With the
assistance of McCarthy Center, and business operations staff (e.g., CIPE, ABS,
Development Services), maintain and manage McCarthy Center budget, including
the endowment, grants and gifts. Advocate for any additional resources for the
McCarthy Center. Support McCarthy Center program design and implementation.
Responsible for the collaborative implementation and revision of the Center's
strategic plan.

B. Fundraising.

Understand, develop, and execute fundraising strategies to support
McCarthy Center programs and operations. Lead the comprehensive campaign for
reaching the McCarthy Center's goals. Identify and cultivate major donors with the
capacity to build the Center's current and long-term sustainability. Identify, write
and oversee grant applications to government agencies, corporations, and
foundations; communicate with granting agencies and write final reports with the
assistance of University Office of Development and Office of Contracts and Grants.
Collaborate with McCarthy Center staff and advisory board to cultivate and build
long-term relationships with major existing and prospective donors. Support and
grow the semi-annual Leo T. McCarthy Award celebration and gala.

C. External Relations.

Manage relationships with the McCarthy Center Board of
Advisors, Committees and its leadership. Identify, cultivate relationships with, and
recommend new advisory board members to the University President with the
assistance of McCarthy Center staff. Steward relationships with the Center's
founders, emeritus Board of Advisors and key stakeholders. Manage relationships
with the University Council on Community Engagement, and recommend new
members to the Provost and Deans with the assistance of McCarthy Center staff.
Represent the McCarthy Center to on-campus administrative units, Colleges,
Schools and Library. Work collaboratively with faculty to inform, advise, and
promote the academic work of the Center.
In conjunction with McCarthy Center staff, enhance the Center's overall visibility
and promote its accomplishments and work, and emphasize the importance of
education, service, and research in support of public service and community
engagement. Maintain a public presence for the McCarthy Center, maintain a media
presence and respond to media requests, participate in on- and off-campus events,
panels, forums, presentations and conversations that advance and sustain the mission
of the McCarthy Center.

D. Staff and Student mentoring.

Assist in developing staff's professional skills, e.g.,
presentation, writing, and evidence gathering skills. Director will advise and mentor
students in McCarthy Center programs and in relevant graduate and undergraduate
majors.

E. Service.

Participate in service to the university and the profession. Remain active in

relevant professional associations, serve on, or appoint a staff member to serve on
the Provost Council, Jesuit Mission Council, University Council on Diversity and
Inclusion, the Master of Arts in Urban and Public Affairs, and Urban Studies
Advisory Board, and related academic and administrative advisory committees.

F. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
At least 8-10 years of demonstrated experience in fundraising and resource
development.
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to public service program developmentand community/civic engagement.
Personal commitment and ability to form community partner relationshipsworking
with local and global marginalized communities and advocating on their behalf.
Experience working with and knowledge of local government and politics in San
Francisco and the greater Bay Area (including Sacramento) and/or Washington, DC.
A commitment to the University's mission, a demonstrated interest in public service,
and an understanding of the functions of an academic institution.
Extensive managerial experience, with a supervisory style that exemplifies a
collaborative approach and an ability to work with a diverse staff in multiple roles.
Ability to manage complex budgets with multiple funding sources, including grants.
Ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with diverse populations
in an urban, multicultural environment is necessary.
High level of cultural competency including sensitivity to race, class, and other
identities, and the ethical dilemmas that is required of an organization committed
addressing systemic oppression.
Exceptional analytic and critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze
information, set priorities, evaluate results, and facilitate resolution of challenges.
Skill at building consensus, respecting distributed expertise, and building a team among
a number of stakeholders within an educational and broader community.
Preferred:
Knowledge and experience with: service-learning theory and practice, community
service and volunteer management models and best practices, civic engagement theory,
models of campus-community partnerships.
