About The Position:
This position places a priority on candidates with the desire and ability to create a classroom culture that positively engages and impacts students, and the willingness and ability to actively engage in college, department, and program initiatives that support the college strategic plan. We are seeking talented candidates who value and support the college goals of improving student success and retention, increasing attainment rate and transfers, and closing the gap for underrepresented students.

The successful candidate is expected to participate in making classroom and work plan decisions, and to promote and engage in an environment of collaboration, support, and shared leadership of the college, department, and program.

About the World Languages Department and the Spanish Program:

The World Languages Department at the Community College of Aurora is currently engaged in two major initiatives, each of which will play a major role in determining the philosophy and direction of both the department and the Spanish program over the next few years.

The first major initiative is the hiring and development of a highly motivated and achieving faculty body who are in education for all the good reasons. This faculty group must base their education and teaching philosophy around the students, their college success, and the completion of their programs.

The second major initiative is actively working to achieve equally high outcomes for all students, particularly in regards to race and ethnicity. To this end, the department faculty will engage in a process of self-study in which we will follow the protocols established by the Center for Urban Education at the University of Southern California. This self-study focuses on being conscious of race in an affirmative sense, and understanding how our own knowledge, beliefs and practices may disadvantage students of color. It will have a major impact on the philosophy and initiatives of the department.

In the Spanish program, the most critical initiative, already in progress, is a comprehensive evaluation of the various course curricula and plans of study. This study will result in a set of best practices to be implemented and assessed by all the program faculty members. This initiative will have a significant impact on achieving CCA's strategic goals of increasing student learning of course outcomes.

With each of these initiatives, our approach is highly focused on working in a collaborative way that includes the voices and actions of all those who have a stake in the outcome: students, full-time and adjunct faculty. We value working in an environment of collaboration, support, and shared leadership of the department and the college.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach courses as assigned
  • Actively participate in college, department and program initiatives
  • Collaborate in the assessment of student learning and the design of the program curriculum
  • Engage in both a self-study and a program study to ensure all students are achieving equally high outcomes, particularly in regards to race and ethnicity
  • Design and implement necessary course adjustments to support college, department, and program goals

    Required Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in Spanish or graduate degree in related field with 18 graduate credits in Spanish
  • Availability to teach evening classes
  • Ability to teach a variety of Spanish courses
  • Excellent pedagogical and administrative skills and practices

  • Demonstrated interest and ability to engage and impact students, particularly students of color
