The Staff Sergeant will effectively plan, organize, supervise, and evaluate the work of campus Public Safety Officers assigned to their shift. The Staff Sergeant will manage the Department of Public Safety during evenings and weekends, in the absence of additional command staff.

As part of the Command Staff, this role enforces departmental policies and procedures, security-related University policies, and relevant local, state and federal laws and ordinances. The Staff Sergeant may also be responsible for coordinating the department lock-up program, and initiating and implementing outreach and educational programs to ensure the safety and security of students, University employees, campus visitors, and campus property.

The Staff Sergeant will work collaboratively with Officers and colleagues in support of department and University objectives. A commitment to the educational mission of the University, support for University and department policies and procedures, and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse campus population is also required.

Job Duties:
  • Provide leadership and supervision for Public Safety Officers: make hiring recommendations; clarify performance expectations; assign daily tasks, delegate patrol assignments, provide instruction in the completion of tasks, and follow-up to assure proper completion of tasks as necessary; initiate training and coaching in support of the department's goals; regularly communicate relevant information; proactively address and document performance issues; evaluate assigned personnel and, in consultation with the command staff, conduct annual performance reviews of Officers.
  • Plan work and assign, communicate, and maintain shift schedules to assure adequate coverage. Anticipate needs and plan for additional coverage during campus events. Manage the Department of Public Safety during evenings and weekends, in the absence of the Lieutenant or additional command staff, assuring a proper response to any incident, coordinating all office functions, and resolving issues as they arise.
  • Coordinate the Public Safety Officers' response to incidents, making arrests and issuing citations as necessary, and assign follow-up investigations.
  • Ensure the response to incidents is within accepted police practices and principles, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist students and their families, University employees, and campus visitors with their security and life safety related needs. Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend action to resolve complaints.
  • Interpret and enforce pertinent laws, and campus rules and regulations pertaining to security and parking.
  • Prepare and submit reports as requested by the command staff, including summaries of cases, incident and investigative reports, etc.
  • Review the officer reports for accuracy and completeness; and ensure timely completion, submission and follow up for all cases
  • Working in conjunction with the Detective Staff Sergeant, investigate incidents and conduct surveillance work as necessary to detect and/or prevent campus crimes.
  • Help develop, implement, and evaluate all Public Safety outreach and educational programs, including programs for students, University employees, and Public Safety personnel.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of University and departmental policies, and campus and building layouts.
  • Assist, as needed, in developing training materials for Officers.
  • Perform duties of a Public Safety Officer on an occasional and as-needed basis.
  • Administer First Aid/CPR/AED as necessary.
  • Perform traffic control functions as necessary.
  • Complete special assignments as requested.
  • Serve as a communications officer as assigned and/or during times of critical need.
  • Perform all the necessary functions of a police officer; both routine and emergency.

    Minimum Qualifications:
  • An Associate's degree from an accredited institution of higher education and five years of public safety, law enforcement, or related experience. Equivalent experience can be substituted for degree.
  • Act 120 certification; Act 2; or Act 120 equivalent (POST Academy)
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills: the ability to develop the skills of direct reports, clarify performance expectations, provide performance coaching, identify performance issues and take prompt and appropriate corrective action; the ability to plan and organize work and staff; the ability to delegate assignments and assure their proper completion.
  • Evidence of sound judgment and decision making abilities.
  • Strong report writing and review skills.
  • The ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills: the ability to keep Officers and members of the University community properly informed of relevant issues; the ability to effectively prepare written reports and correspondence.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: the ability to work effectively with various constituents (Officers, students, parents, alumni, Trustees, campus visitors, neighbors, and city officials); the ability to work collaboratively with Officers and colleagues in support of department and University objectives; sensitivity in dealing with various populations on campus and within the community.
  • Commitment to supporting and maintaining a diverse campus community.
  • Ability to use computerized information systems and databases; word processing / typing skills.
  • Valid US drivers license.

    Other Requirements:
  • This position is primarily an evening and night shift position.
  • Day, night, and weekend hours as well as some holidays will be required as the Staff Sergeant is part of the Command Staff and is considered an Essential employee.
  • This role will serve on-call as necessary, and as an Essential employee must live within 30 minutes of campus and be able to respond in during inclement weather and declared disasters.

    Physical Demands:
  • The ability to lift, move, push, pull, or carry materials weighing from 20 to 50 lbs.
  • Regular walking, biking, and driving is required.
  • Must be able to run, bend, lift, and climb as required.
  • Must be able to quickly respond to critical incidents.
