General Description
Under the direction of the Provost of the COS Tulare Campus and the Dean of Student Services, the Student Support Services Specialist will perform a variety of specialized duties related to the planning and the implementation of the orientation and matriculation programs in support of the student success with an emphasis in orientation, outreach, and conduct tours of the Tulare College Campus, including the farm, shops and agriculture instructional areas. This will include but is not limited to planning, and implementation of program activities and providing students with related information.

This position is a full-time, (40 hours/week), 12 month position. The hours for this position are Monday - Friday, 7:45 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. Initial salary placement will be $48,816.

Job Duties
Job duties of the Student Support Services Specialist include:

  • Prepare and edit a wide variety of materials such as correspondence, reports, forms, applications, flyers, brochures, memoranda and other documents.
  • Plan, organize and deliver on and off campus activities and programs to provide information and assistance to students regarding academic and financial support services.
  • Provide and maintain accurate information about educational and student support programs of the college; distribute information to students and public via webpage, newsletters, flyers, brochures, posters, presentations, etc.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver presentations; Information Orientation Sessions and Workshops to assist students in applying to college and achieving their educational goals.
  • Maintain regular contact with students to address and assist with problem solving; update student files as necessary.
  • Prepare and disseminate information, applications, and other program related documentation/items to students.
  • Establish professional contacts with colleagues at high schools, community service agencies, and other educational agencies to assist with student success, enrollment, and retention.
  • Organize and conduct campus tours and activities for students and community groups.
  • Attend staff meetings, conferences, and seminars to maintain current knowledge regarding program eligibility requirements, regulations and District policies.
  • Prepare memoranda independently and from oral instructions.
  • Utilize the District's integrated software in performing the required duties of the position.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the College community and appropriate staff to develop and implement orientation strategies required for matriculation.
  • Plan, organize, and administer computerized and traditional pencil and paper assessment testing both on and off campus to large groups or on an individual basis, assist in the development of test schedules, assist students with proper test selection and monitor test site for appropriate testing atmosphere.
  • Troubleshoot computer hardware and software for computerized assessment and placement program.
  • Assist with assessment program on and off District sites.
  • Establish and maintain relationship with staff and District feeder high schools to implement the goals of the Student Support Services Program.
  • Maintain proper testing environment both on and off site.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):

Any combination equivalent to:
  • Completion of two years of college-level coursework and two years of increasingly responsible business/office experience.

Licenses and Other Requirements:
  • Valid California's driver's license
  • An incumbent must be insurable at the standard rate by the employer's insurance carrier at all times while employed in this classification by the College of the Sequoias Community College District.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Basic knowledge of agriculture or an educational background in agricultural education/communications.

Knowledge and Abilities
The hiring committee is seeking evidence of the following:

Knowledge of:
  • Federal and state guidelines/regulations, policies and procedures as related to orientation, and matriculation
  • College admission procedures.
  • Word processing, spreadsheet and database related software.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
  • Applicable sections of State Education Code and other applicable laws.
  • Correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Public relations and student support techniques
  • Interpersonal skill using tact, patience and courtesy
Ability to:
  • Prepare and deliver oral presentations.
  • Work confidentially and independently with discretion.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with department staff and other COS personnel.
  • Meet concurrent deadlines.
