Department of Theatre and Dance
The Theatre and Dance Program offers courses in the fields of speech acting, dance, directing, choreographing, design and technical theatre, theatre and dance history, dramatic literature, and others. Course requirements for both the major and the minor programs provide for flexibility and allow students considerable choice in planning their academic careers.

Theatre Arts Majors (Theatre Arts and Dance Options) and Theatre and Dance Minors participate in the department's ambitious production program through acting, dance, scenic design and construction, lighting, stage management, box office, and other areas. Academic credit is provided for such participation.

The Position
The ideal candidate will be a scholar/teacher with a specialty in oral communication in a bilingual or multi-lingual setting. A background in theatre is desirable, but not required. All candidates must have a strong record of teaching public speaking to undergraduates. A record of scholarly achievement or promise is required, although candidates with a strong professional experience will also be considered. The ideal candidate will have a commitment to promoting student academic success through the instruction of public speaking and oral communication and have a strong commitment to student academic success, the ability to act as a mentor, and sensitivity to equality and diversity issues.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include teaching three undergraduate courses per semester from the following: Fundamentals of Speech, Speech Skills and Techniques, Voice and Diction, Oral Interpretation of Literature, Persuasion, and Interpersonal Communication. The ability to coordinate the Speech Program to include management skills to coordinate over 25 sections of Fundamentals of Speech, foster student interest in the Speech Minor, translate voice and performance strategies in the speech classroom; while teaching master classes to speech faculty, teach argumentation and debate as well as starting and coaching a debate team, assist in the area of forensics, develop new courses for bilingual or multi-lingual speakers, and foster Speaking Across the Curriculum by leading campus-wide programs to help reinforce basic skills in oral communication in Upper Division Courses for students and faculty. Other duties include curriculum development, student advisement for speech minors, participation in developing department procedures and guidelines, involvement in student recruitment, committee service at the department, college and university level. Faculty will be expected to continue professional activities by publishing, presenting at conferences, competing with the debate team, and other related professional or creative activities.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Oral Communication, Performance Studies or or related field OR an MFA in Speech Communication, Performance Studies or Theatre;
  • Demonstrated record of publication, research, and/or creative activities OR promising research and/or creative activities agenda;
  • Evidence of a minimum of two-years of effective solo college teaching experience; and
  • Ability to teach lower and upper division speech courses including: Fundamentals of Speech, Speech Skills and Techniques, Oral Interpretation of Literature, Persuasion, and Interpersonal Communication;
  • Experience in teaching undergraduates from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

    Preferred /Desired Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Oral Communication or related field;
  • Background in a Theatre or Performance Studies at undergraduate or graduate level;
  • Expertise in bilingual or multi-lingual communications as evidenced by teaching and research;
  • Demonstrated record of presenting at conferences, competing with the debate and/or forensic teams at competitions, research and/or creative activities, and related student recruitment;
  • Academic experience as a program speech coordinator, e.g., ability to coordinate speech courses, develop the speech minor and further develop the upper division speech curriculum, coach a debate team, and assist with forensics;
  • Evidence of a minimum of four-years of effective solo (non-teaching assistant) college teaching experience;
  • Experience competing in in Intercollegiate Forensics Tournaments;
  • Expertise in the various forms of intercollegiate debate, including NFA-LD, British Parliamentary, and IPDA;
  • Successful experience teaching undergraduates from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds, including adoption of appropriate pedagogical strategies for diverse student populations;
  • Demonstrated record of excellent teaching in the areas of lower and upper division speech including: Fundamentals of Speech, Speech Skills and Techniques, Voice and Diction, Oral Interpretation of Literature, Persuasion, and Interpersonal Communication;
  • Experience and interest in teaching introductory theatre classes, directing, acting, teaching online classes; and
  • Demonstrated experience in department/college/university service.

    Employment Requirement - Background Check

CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
