Transfer Evaluator

Position Summary:
This position exists to articulate and process transfer credit by researching and analyzing transfer work, and to integrate these courses into the transfer equivalency tables. The position also methodically examines, reviews, and verifies transfer institution catalog inventories. The position evaluates student transcripts, provides students with individualized reports of transferred credit, and advises students regarding transfer credit awarded. The evaluator counsels faculty and staff on appropriate use of transfer credit and ensures adherence to all University transfer policies. In addition, the evaluator employs technical expertise to update student records and create electronic files. Continuous training is also provided by this position to fellow employees, Transfer Services Office counselors and student employees. This position determines the accreditation of international post-secondary schools and validity of documentation. Also, the evaluator establishes permanent school codes for accredited international schools and creates transfer equivalency tables; researches and articulates international credit, advises students on credit applicability, and explains the rationale behind transfer credit decisions.

Duties/Responsibilities:
35% Determines regional accreditation, academic calendar(semester or quarter hours), course numbering system, and grading policies of national and international postsecondary schools. Researches and analyzes transfer credit, deciding on course acceptability and appropriate course equivalency according to departmental policies as well as MSU Denver and CCHEregulations. Creates and maintains course inventory in transfer institution catalog tables to enable articulation of transfer (course) to MSU Denver course. Audits transfer institution catalog tables of specific Colorado postsecondary schools by implementing revisions as dictated by State Guaranteed Transfer guidelines, coordinating annual review of inventoried courses, and monitoring the web site display of MSU Denvers equivalent transfer courses. Conducts extensive research of international universities using available paper and web resources to determine accreditation and degree equivalency. Articulates international courses to MSU Denver general education and degree programs.

30% Updates student records by recording receipt of official documentation, and changing appropriate attributes within the system which may impact the financial aid award or hinder the ability to register for classes and/or qualify for graduation. Evaluates and awards postsecondary academic transfer credit to students records, including college transcripts and Credit for Prior Learning [AP, IB, CLEP, and military]. Determines and applies appropriate distribution of, and limitations on, the use of transferred credit within the degree program to facilitate the students progress toward degree completion. Selecting from various options, decides the best use of credit based on departmental policies, DegreeWorks requirements, and MSUDenver regulations.

10% Answers students questions of credit award and the applicability of transfer work to general studies and degree requirements. Makes requested changes if deemed legitimate to fall within the guidelines of academic departmental policies and MSU Denver regulations. Advises administrators, faculty, and staff regarding degree requirements, general studies applicability and distribution, state Guarantee Transfer guidelines, articulation agreements with non-accredited and accredited schools with specialized program areas, and specific requirements established by various academic departments. Interprets, clarifies, and applies policies and standards as well as justifies decisions to students and academic departments. Serves as an expert resource for the Transfer Services Office counselors, who perform preliminary credit evaluations for walk-in students. Assists transfer counselors by resolving questionable transfer issues, researching course acceptability or accreditation of unfamiliar institutions, and assisting in their office with preliminary evaluations and student inquiries. Participates in open house recruiting events by utilizing mastery of the transfer database and MSU Denver policies. Limited resources available at open houses requires the ability to call upon an accumulated store of accurate and detailed information to clearly communicate with prospective students while composing unofficial transcript evaluations, advising on transfer course determinations, fielding questions regarding degree program and general education requirements, and making recommendations for the next course of action.

10% Trains, guides, and explains work processes and procedures to co-workers and student employees by educating them about unfamiliar concepts: the purpose and use of various forms, such as, departmental memos and status change forms used by faculty, students and staff for implementing changes to student records; requirements for accepting documents as complete and official; efficiently using various required software programs; navigating and manipulating Banner; and operating peripheral hardware equipment. Varying specialties within the work unit often require a synergy of the positions in order to obtain the best outcome for the student. Such collaboration facilitates cross-training of specific duties to better serve students and the department. Trains evaluators in aspects of international evaluations that flow into domestic transcript evaluation. Educates faculty advisors in the application of international credit to meet individual departmental criteria.

10% Sorts and scans all completed paperwork received in application processing and transcript evaluation. Indexes scanned pages according to document type and corresponding student, to create a file that becomes part of the students permanent record. Diligent attention must be given to matching the name on the index list with that on the imaged page to guarantee it reaches the proper destination.

5% Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience (Please note the equivalency standard is two (2) years of experience equals one (1) year of education)
A minimum of one year experience in the Registrar, Admission or Advising office working with transcript/credential evaluation
Experience working with Banner or related Student Information System

Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with policies, procedures, laws and regulations pertaining to institutions of higher education and experience in evaluating national and international college transcripts
Experience or knowledge of transfer processes, articulation agreements and how accredited and non-accredited schools impact credit evaluations
Experience or familiarity working under FERPA and rules of confidentiality
Experience working with underrepresented students
Ability to work independently and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor
Demonstrated attention to detail
