THE DEPARTMENT:
Centennial Honors College
Created in 1999 the Centennial Honors College is a service college and enrolls roughly 800 honors students through a special curriculum of honors seminars, colloquia, directed research, recitals, and internships. The Centennial Honors College is also responsible for recruitment and marketing, curriculum development, new program initiatives, scholarships, grants and endowment, honors housing, honors activities, special events, data collection, the Honors Convocation, an interdisciplinary Pre-Law Honors Minor, and honors advising. To this end the Dean of the Centennial Honors College coordinates Honors College responsibilities with academic departments and colleges, admissions, university/college/departmental academic advising, university housing, the registrar's office, and student services. The Dean also works with the University Honors Council to establish College policy, approve curriculum, award scholarships and grants, and identify the Honors Convocation Speaker and College Scholar.
Because the Honors College enrolls students from all of the traditional academic colleges and because its Dean reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Honors College enjoys among the University's colleges a unique position within Academic Affairs. It is in the position to initiate and coordinate academic events or oversee academic functions that do not otherwise fall within the province of any particular academic unit. Since its inception, the Honors College has assumed responsibility for the Honors Convocation, for a University Research Day, for major national/international scholarships and fellowships, for an annual Pre-Law Symposium, for an annual Pre-Med Symposium, and for the international honorary society, Golden Key. All of these and other responsibilities are in the service of the entire university and its students.
