Licensed to the Board of Trustees of San Diego State University, KPBS serves a countywide audience with news, information, cultural, entertainment, arts, and educational television, radio and digital programming. The station exists to inform, enlighten, and entertain San Diego viewers and listeners by presenting locally and nationally produced programming that is valued and worth maintaining.

The Media Production Specialist plays an important role in supporting content creation for KPBS. As a Media Production Specialist, they utilize their technical and production expertise in assisting producers, hosts, reporters, and other technical personnel to make content come to life and serve our audience. Primarily responsible for technical, aesthetic, and programmatic components of KPBS Radio and Podcast content. The duties of this position require the incumbent to be capable of independent action, cooperating closely with and providing assistance to staff and performing well in stressful situations. This person will work under the supervision of the Director of Audio Programming and Operations to meet the ever-changing needs of our multiple content operations.

This position is covered under the SAG-AFTRA collective bargaining agreement with KPBS.

Responsibilities

Technical Direction 40%
  • Provide technical direction for local radio productions; run the board and coordinate all technical elements.
  • Work closely with the program producer(s), host(s), and other technical personnel to orchestrate the program and offer appropriate technical solutions to ongoing problems
  • Serve as backup for all programs and podcasts as assigned.


Production Services 15%
  • May be asked to work as part of the Productions Services Team to operate equipment for local content and other productions.
  • Oversee operation of the KPBS studios, which include television and radio studios, plus editing and post production suites. Other audio assignments could include Zoom, Bric sessions, pledge programs, live events, and other outside programs.


Post Production 40%
  • Utilize multitrack audio editing techniques, compression, sample rates, automation, and digital audio file formats to export audio in various formats for broadcast, online streaming, and on-demand downloads.
  • Evaluate programmatic elements and advise producers of time constraints, continuity needs, and aesthetic options.
  • Collaborate with Content Producers to edit and mix content for broadcast or podcast.


Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned 5%

Work Hours: The Media Production Specialist will work 9:30am to 6:00pm, 40 hours per week Monday through Friday, with some weekends and on-call duties on occasion, mostly on an emergency as-needed basis.


Qualifications
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of a full range of production techniques and equipment used in audio production and editing software in both studio and field environments.
  • Ability to learn and apply techniques used throughout the production cycle; pre-production, production, and post-production.
  • Ability to manage and monitor multiple audio sources on mixing board throughout live board shift
  • Ability to efficiently manage zoom or telephone lines and patch phone guests/callers through mixing board for on-air use
  • Ability to be well organized, meet deadlines, be detail oriented; possess good judgment and common sense.
  • Ability to interact effectively with co-workers.
  • Understand and follow posted work rules and procedures
  • Ability to relate well to others within the KPBS environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Experience
  • Minimum of 6 months radio studio technical experience, especially in the role of technical director.

Education
  • Equivalent to Bachelors degree in TV/Radio communications or related field.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of radio studio technical experience.
  • Experience in computer software used in audio production: Audition, Final Cut Pro. Knowledge of Wideorbit or other Automation Systems helpful.
