Aztec Aquaplex Supervisor

GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Aquaplex Coordinator, the Aquaplex Supervisor will assist with the supervision of Aquaplex staff and facility operations. The Aquaplex Supervisor will focus on the safety of daily operations, staff supervision/training, program supervision, and facility events. The Aquaplex Supervisor is responsible for upholding the Aztec Recreation mission and values of Wellness, Integrity, Safety, Service, Professionalism, Excellence, and Respect.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Manages daily operations of the Aztec Aquaplex to ensure compliance with all Aztec Recreation, facility, and university policies and ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all members, affiliates and guests
  • Responsible for the supervision and security of the 35,000 sq. ft. Aztec Aquaplex. Consistently and confidently enforces all polices established to ensure participant safety and facility integrity
  • Appropriately and confidently acts as the first responder to all injuries and incidents occurring during hours of operation
  • Responsible for assisting with hiring, training, scheduling, coaching and evaluating Aquaplex staff; assists with department trainings and Aquaplex staff in-services
  • Responsible for holding regular meetings with the Aquaplex student staff
  • Assists with administrative tasks, data entry, reports, program statistics, filing, and reporting
  • Assists with supervision of Aquaplex programming and/or events (intramurals, sport clubs, aquatic programs, rentals, etc.)
  • Responsible for conducting competitive swim instruction for fitness swimmers according to course syllabi, and learning outcomes
  • Develops semester-long lesson and training plans and/or schedules
  • Responsible for completing and reporting regular facility audits and equipment inspections
  • Ensures the implementation of appropriate risk management plan; prepares required injury/incident reports; Reports any facility hazards; Proactively takes steps to eliminate future risk
  • Position includes processing program registration, point of sale transactions, equipment checkout station, providing facility tours and verifying member eligibility
  • Knowledgeable of departmental and facility procedures and emergency policies; stays current on issues/changes in operations
  • Proposes future efficiencies and establish protocols and procedures for Aquaplex operations; Ongoing assessment of Aquaplex staff members, facility operations, and programs

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum & Preferred Requirements

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Recreation, Recreational Administration, Physical Education, Sports Administration, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred

Experience:
  • Two years supervisory experience in a recreation or related field preferred
  • Two years instructional experience in a competitive aquatic program
  • Experience with aquatic recreational facility management, customer service, aquatic programming, and lifeguarding.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of customer service

License & Certification:
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for the professional rescuer
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (must obtain within 30 days of hire)
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
  • Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) (must obtain within 30 days of hire)

Trainings:
  • Anti-Harassment Training for Supervisors (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
  • Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
  • Gender Awareness Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
  • Must be able to work in stressful situations and make respectable decisions
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong organizational skills required. Must be able to follow oral and written directions and follow projects through to completion.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Must have strong English language skills and the ability to read, write and verbally communicate at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
  • Ability to operate personal computer, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to learn and utilize new software programs
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, tools and equipment necessary for the repair, alteration, maintenance and operation of buildings and facilities
  • Working knowledge of building, fire, OSHA and life safety codes and regulations
  • Well organized, ability to effectively multi-task, ability to prioritize work, problem solve, make decisions and meet scheduled deadlines under pressure
  • Must be self-motivated, self-starter and perform with minimal direction and supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to relate and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, colleagues and guests
  • Ability to present a consistent positive approach to students and all internal and external contacts by being courteous, respectful, helpful and cooperative at all times
  • Commitment to a high standard of safety and ability to communicate and train safety policies and procedures to staff
  • Ability to interpret and communicate policies and procedures
  • Ability to adapt to and work in an environment of constant change, growth and frequent interruptions

COMPENSATION

Starting range: $25.56 - $28 per hour

SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a full-time position. Flexibility and willingness to work long and irregular hours and days, including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed by event schedule.

General office and outdoor environment. Work varies in nature, but may require sitting, standing, walking, and moving around aquatics facility. The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

This position requires the individual to spend time sitting and using office equipment and computers. This person will also spend time lifting and moving aquatic equipment based on scheduled programs and activities. This position may be required to supervise aquatic programs and spend additional time on pool deck. Ability to lift 45lbs and move heavy equipment.

Inside the Organization:
  • Reports to the Aquaplex Coordinator
  • Assists with supervision of part-time student staff
  • Works closely and collaborates with Aquaplex Coordinator and Aquaplex Manager
  • Coordinates with Marketing Coordinator for assessment, marketing and events
  • Coordinates with Building Services staff for facility and equipment maintenance efforts
  • Works with all other Aztec Recreation staff
