Job Description:

Technology and Trades at Madison College is seeking a Senior Laboratory Coordinator to be responsible for training and supporting both full- and part-time faculty and support staff.

Playing a key role in the creation, maintenance, and delivery of all laboratory courses, typically overseeing 5-7 lab courses per semester. Responsibilities include performing routine competency checks for new employees and students, ensuring adherence to quality control protocols, enforcing all safety procedures, and providing supplemental instruction across multiple lab environments.

The Senior Laboratory Coordinator also coordinates daily lab operations, including the preparation of solutions and bacterial cultures, weekly development of cell cultures, lab setup and cleanup, equipment maintenance, and supervision of open lab sessions for students. Also, managing inventory, orders necessary materials and supplies, and develops laboratory instructions aligned with current safety and industry standards. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

This is an onsite, full-time position, 40 hours per week during the 40-week academic year. The schedule offers flexibility Monday through Friday within the college's operating hours of 7:00a.m. to 5:00p.m.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Performs set-up and clean-up of lab supplies and equipment used during labs. This includes assembly installation, testing and operation of lab equipment. Coordinates with the instructor of record in assembling materials and supplies needed for labs. Prepares supplies, materials, and equipment for special student projects.
  • Provides assistance and guidance to students during the laboratory sessions alongside the instructor of record and during open laboratory times. Provides consultation and clarification for students on laboratory materials and experiment details.
  • Provides technical expertise and trains new instructors (full and part time) on specific equipment and lab procedures and maintains the consistency of the laboratory curriculum.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by performing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturers' instructions; trouble shooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and technologies.
  • In collaboration with instructors, reorganizes laboratory modules and workbooks to accommodate instructional changes.
  • Actively participates in program outreach and recruitment activities by developing and leading hands-on activities for diverse groups of prospective students and visitors.
  • Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant biotechnology protocols and equipment advancements.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in laboratory procedures and equipment used in biotechnology courses and industry. Experience working with iPSCs and HPLC preferred.
  • Ability to operate and maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory systems and equipment used in the biotechnology laboratories
  • Working knowledge in cell culturing, molecular biology, protein purification, chromatography and microbiology.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in time management, planning, organizing, and completing complex tasks in a timely and cost-effective manner with limited supervision.
  • Mid-level computer skills (Word, Excel, Internet, lab software, etc.) with the interest and ability to quickly learn and integrate new software products to increase productivity.


Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology or related field or equivalent work experience. *Experience used as an equivalent of an educational requirement is in addition to any experience required by the position.
  • Three (3) years work experience directly related to the skills required for successfully performing the duties of this position.
