Human Communication Instructor


College of Marin seeks part-time Human Communication instructors to teach one or more of the following courses for the Fall 2025 semester on the Kentfield campus. Part-time instructors may teach up to 10 units per semester.

COMM 100 - Introduction to Communication
3.0 units. (No prerequisite.) An interactive course introducing the theory and practice of communication, rhetoric,
and public speaking. Students will deliver informative and persuasive speeches, learn about key areas in
communication studies, such as speaking in a democratic society, rhetorical theory, active listening, intercultural
and interpersonal communication, and small group communication), and provide peer speeches. Focus on

One COMM 100 courses available. Instructors may teach a combination of the four (4) courses available between COMM 100 and COMM C1000, up to 10 units maximum.

Dates: 8/26/25 - 12/19/25 (Finals Week 12/15 - 12/19/25)

COMM C1000 - Introduction to Public Speaking
3.0 units. (No prerequisite.) This introductory course in rhetoric and public address focuses on the creation and presentation of speeches that inform, persuade, inspire, and/or entertain. Emphasis is on analyzing the audience, adapting ideas and evidence in support of a thesis, developing language suitable to the occasion, applying ethical decision-making, and practicing delivery to effectively convey the message. The course develops critical listening skills as well as managing public speaking anxiety through performance and evaluation. (CSU/UC). College of Marin Intro to Public Speaking Course Outline.

Three COMM C1000 courses available. Instructors may teach a combination of the four (4) courses available between COMM 100 and COMM C1000, up to 10 units maximum.

REQUIREMENTS
1. A Master's degree in Speech, Speech Broadcasting, Telecommunications, Rhetoric, Communication, Communication Studies, Speech Communication, or Organizational Communication;or
2. A Bachelor's degree in any of the aboveANDa Master's in Drama/Theater Arts, Mass Communication, or English;or
3. The equivalent; and
4. Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the campus community.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:

1. In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
2. Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
3. California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
4. Certificated candidates who have not previously been employed in an academic position in California will be required to provide a medical certificate from a licensed physician showing that the candidate is free from any communicable disease unfitting the candidate to instruct or associate with students. The medical exam shall have been conducted not more than six months before submission of the certificate and shall be at the expense of the candidate. (Ed. Code Section 87408)
5. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. 6. Candidates applying for positions with the Marin Community College District may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under the California Education Code.

SALARY INFORMATION
FLSA Status: Exempt
Salary Range:$90,657 - $124,850* (see below for part-time instruction breakdown)

*Salaries for part-time instructors are based on the number of units taught and are paid at 95% of the Full-time Faculty Salary Schedule. New part-time instructors will be placed between Step 1, Column 1, and Step 9, Column 5 of the salary schedule, depending on verified background and experience. Salary placement is non-negotiable.

Temporary Part-time Credit Instructor Payment Formula:
1. Monthly: Annual salary (from salary schedule) x # of Units/30 units, x 95% = semester payment; divide by five (5) = monthly salary.
2. Per Unit: Annual salary (from salary schedule) x 95%/ 30 units= per unit rate.
