Job Summary
The Emergency Management Specialist supports the Division of Emergency Management in the Department of Public Safety at the University of Utah by implementing all-hazards planning, training and exercise development, with a focus on cross-training in key incident command system section leadership positions (finance, logistics, operations and planning). The specialist will also share in other duties as assigned, including emergency response (e.g., staffing the Emergency Operations Center during planned and unplanned events) that will require scheduling outside of normal working hours. No relocation expenses are available for this position.
Safety is a top priority for the University of Utah. The Chief Safety Officer (CSO) for the University is the Director of Public Safety and serves as chief of police services. The CSO is responsible for overseeing the University's Department of Public Safety, which includes the following operational divisions: University Police, Campus Security, UHealth Security, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications, and the central administrative Office of the CSO.

Responsibilities
1. Works under the direction of the Associate Director of Emergency Management
2. Supports key programs through planning, training, and exercise development
3. Operational duties at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during planned and unplanned events
4. Available for on-call duties evenings and weekends as required
5. Supports the incident management team
6. Participate in outreach and promotion activities
7. Participate in professional development
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree (or equivalency) in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency. Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience. (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience.)

Preferences
A bachelor's degree in emergency management or related field
Demonstrated knowledge (e.g., field experience and/or coursework) of the National Incident Management system and the Incident Command System
Demonstrated knowledge of emergency management principles and best practices
GIS experience is preferred
Applicants with 3+ years of experience in emergency management or related field may be given preference.
