Job Summary
The Laboratory Manager in the Karasov Lab in the University of Utah's School of Biological Sciences will oversee the daily operations of a cutting-edge research lab specializing in microbial genomics and plant biology. This role will engage in experimental and computational biology while mentoring the next generation of scientists. This position will involve the theoretical and practical application of knowledge in biological science.
Responsibilities
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:
Laboratory Management to maintain the organization and efficient operation of the lab, including ordering supplies, equipment maintenance, and ensuring compliance with safety regulation. Manage and track lab budgets and resources. Provide research support by conducting experiments involving molecular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics techniques. Program in Python and R to analyze data, develop computation pipelines, and generate visualizations. Troubleshoot protocols, innovate experimental approaches, and contribute to manuscript preparation. Provide hands-on training to graduate students and lab members in molecular techniques, bioinformatics tools, and data analysis methods. Develop and deliver workshops or tutorials on computational methods, including programming and software usage.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 4 - 6 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.
Master's degree in a related area may be preferred.
