Job Summary
The Student Parent Support Center provides information, support, and family resources for University students, faculty, staff, and patients. The Student Parent Support Center programs are
NAEYC accredited and serve children birth to six years. We offer part-time and full-time programming in three campus child care programs for students, faculty, and staff and drop-in child care for patients visiting the three U Health Centers throughout the Salt Lake Valley.
The Student Parent Support Center performs a vital role at the University of Utah, by providing information and support to students, faculty, staff, and early childhood practitioners. We are experiencing unprecedented growth which provides for positions available at all UKids programs. These include Campus Child Care Programs (UKids -Presidents Circle, UKids - East Village, and UKids-Guardsman Way). Multiple openings and continuous hiring. Provides routine child care office support. Provides support and assists with the overall administration and development of child care center operation.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Assists with child care program planning and implementation, including curriculum, licensing, and accreditation.
- Compiles, sorts, and organizes data for third party software according to state and regulation, distributes program information, and conducts program research for implementation.
- Answers telephones and gives information to callers, takes messages, or transfers calls to appropriate individuals. Conducts program tours.
- Greets visitors and communicates with customers, employees, and other individuals to answer questions, disseminate or explain information, and address complaints.
Department Specific Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must demonstrate effective communication with professionals, parents and children
- Must demonstrate an ability to work independently but show a willingness to take direction from the supervisor
- Must be warm, energetic and enjoy working with families and young children (6 weeks to 5 years.)
- Must pass a BCI and fingerprint background check as required by Utah Child Care Licensing.
- Must be willing to obtain first aid training within 3 months of employment
- Demonstrated skills in Microsoft Office and management software
- Must meet physical characteristics needed for the performance of all job duties (with or without the use of aids):
- Sufficient vision to read small printed material as well as long distances across playgrounds and classrooms for child supervision.
- Sufficient hearing to hear normal and telephone conversation
- Ability to speak in an understandable manner.
- Tone with sufficient volume to be heard in an office and/or a busy classroom environment.
- Lift small children (up to 30 lbs.)
- Carry small children in arms for short distances.
- Move about on hands and knees and sit on the floor with children.
- Exhibits physical stamina necessary for daily interaction with young children (walking, kneeling, sitting on floor, lifting up to 30 lbs., etc.)
- Ability to sit at computer and perform repetitive motions.
- Physical dexterity to use a pen or pencil in a legible format, operate a computer keyboard and other devices.
- Responds to queries of parents and community and coordinates activities within the program.
- Assists in the creation and distribution of program materials, forms, and general correspondence.
- Track and report on current child care center trends to determine future program needs.
- Provide program specific training and guide staff behavior in positive manner. May conduct staff disciplinary actions when needed and directed by Program Coordinator.
- Evaluate and follow child care center policies, regulations, and procedures.
- Fills in for teachers in the classroom or any other center position, as needed. Acts as Director Designee when Program Coordinator is not present in the center.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree in a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus two years of related experience required; ability to use logic and reasoning to prioritize tasks; computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet software, and/or database software preferred; demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required.
Bachelor's degree in a related field may be preferred.

Preferences
Child Development Associate (CDA), Associates, or Bachelor's or equivalent in early childhood education preferred and more than the minimum two year child care center experience. National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and Department of Health Child Care Licensing rules and regulations experience preferred.
