Job Description Summary


DEFINITION

Under general supervision, the Nursing and Allied Health Laboratory and Simulation Technician supports healthcare education by operating and maintaining simulation equipment, including manikins and human patient simulators, to create realistic learning environments. The technician ensures the proper functionality of simulation technology, assists faculty with simulation sessions, and manages the inventory and maintenance of lab and simulation resources.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Nursing and Allied Health Laboratory and Simulation Technician is distinguished from other Technician classes in that incumbents are required to be knowledgeable in equipment, materials, and safe practices used in human patient simulation.

Essential Functions & Qualifications


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Prepare and set up simulation lab sessions as directed by faculty;
  • Maintain knowledge of simulation equipment catalogs and operation manuals;
  • Program simulator software to replicate physiological responses per instructor specifications;
  • Operate patient simulators, cameras, and audiovisual equipment during simulation sessions;
  • Maintain and troubleshoot simulation equipment, including patient simulators, computers, and medical devices;
  • Coordinate with vendors for repairs and software updates;
  • Assist faculty in organizing, maintaining, and restocking skills lab and simulation supplies;
  • Provide technical support for task trainers, multimedia peripherals, and medical equipment such as patient monitors, medication dispensing systems, and vital sign monitors;
  • Apply moulage and special effects for simulation scenarios;
  • Train and assist faculty, instructors, and staff using simulation equipment;
  • Manage the inventory of medical supplies, equipment, and materials;
  • Coordinate the annual inventory of medical supplies for each program;
  • Collaborate with faculty to identify items for ordering;
  • Prepare purchase orders for medical supplies for all programs, obtain necessary approvals, and source competitive pricing from vendors;
  • Reconcile purchase orders with received supplies;
  • Follow up on backorders, errors, and incomplete orders with vendors;
  • Coordinate the receipt, storage, and distribution of supplies for each program;
  • Biannually, in coordination with the Division Chair, Nursing and Allied Health program directors, update pricing for skills kit supplies to facilitate material fee updates;
  • Manage medical supply donations from clinical agencies and the community;
  • Work with the program directors and faculty to determine each semester's rental equipment needs (e.g., IV and PCA pumps);
  • Coordinate with vendors to establish rental agreements;
  • Collaborate with hospital/agency departments to arrange the calibration and updating of biomedical equipment (e.g., glucometers, Smart Pumps);
  • Oversee all programs' proper disposal and management of laboratory and hazardous waste;
  • Facilitate the delivery and pick-up of hazardous waste bins and ensure proper disposal procedures;
  • Manage the delivery and pick-up of compressed air and oxygen canisters;
  • Ensure confidentiality of simulation activities and learner information; and
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Health, Computer Science, Management Information Technology, or a related field; OR
  • Associate's degree in a healthcare field, such as, Nursing (RN), Paramedic, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), or any related science field of study; AND
  • Two years of related experience; OR
  • Any combination of education, training, and/or experience demonstrating qualifications for the position.


Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Clinical knowledge and experience in a lab setting;
  • Technical expertise handling computer hardware and software and willingness to learn new simulation-related technology and audiovisual software;
  • Experience with operating standard audiovisual equipment (e.g., projectors, microphones, and media players);
  • Strong organizational and time management skills;
  • Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;
  • Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and
  • District policies and procedures.


Ability to:
  • Collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and vendors;
  • Maintain and troubleshoot simulation equipment;
  • Maintain confidentiality of information;
  • Explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical users;
  • Availability for evening and weekend work as needed;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.


Physical ability to:
  • Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;
  • Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull 50 pounds; and
  • Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.
